I finally installed my new primary cover after the original one broke and left me stranded in Sturgis last month……1100 miles from home!! I won’t go into detail about how it really put a damper on our vacation and how much of a pita it was getting me and a broken motorcycle home, and locating a new primary cove, but in the end, I guess things kinda worked out. What concerns me now is why it broke in the first place. What caused the failure is the shoulder broke that the clutch ball ramp presses against when the clutch is dis-engaged. This caused the clutch lever to travel freely all the way to the hand grip, without disengaging the clutch. I performed a BadWeB search and have found others who have had the exact failures. One of them is Obiewan who started a thread with excellent photos and a nicely done fix to his broken cover: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/282980.html I am concerned that this may happen again. I primarily use my Uly for longer rides including many multiple day trips out of state. Catastrophic break downs like these can be very inconvient and can ruin what is supposed to be a fun vacation. A few thousand miles ago there has been a rattling noise coming from my primary when the clutch lever is pulled in…….but only when the bike is fully stopped and in gear. I’m not surer if this is a factor in the failure but it seems suspisous And yes, my primary chain and both clutch adjustments (ball ramp and cable) are properly adjusted. Maybe there is some issue with the clutch shell, needle bearing, or clutch hub? Maybe there is a vibration that stresses the cover over time? Maybe there is someone in the collective here that might have some insight or experience as what might be causing these primary covers to break. Thanks all. |

My guess is the root cause is the metal on at least some primary covers is a little thin in that area. Another possibility is some people are unintentionally riding with the clutch adjusted out of spec which somehow causes additional stress on the lip until it breaks off. Obiewan's repair looks like a not-too-difficult and permanent fix to me. If mine ever breaks, that's what I'll do. (Message edited by Hughlysses on September 16, 2010) |

If this was a common problem then there would be something to worry about, but it's not. If your clutch and primary are adjusted correctly as you say then put it out of your mind. I've got 29,000 miles plus on my original 06' fan, clutch wire form, front engine isolator and just about everything else and I'm not sweating it one bit. The more negative vibes your ULY detects, the more crap will happen. Think positive always. |
