Hi guys, I wasn't sure where I should post this, as it could be a number of different causes as to why I cannot power wheelie on my bike. Heres what I got: 97 S1..8,000 miles on it. Stock engine except for a Borla carbon muffler (Bartels) and the Bartels carbon air filter. I have the race ignition, and the stock cv40 carb. I recently took off the carb, to see if maybe jetting was the issue. I replaced the needle with the sportster one..shimmed 10 thousands. Drilled out the slide, and checked the jets in it. I bought this used, so I had no idea what to expect for jetting. It had a 48 slow, and 195 fast. I thought maybe the slow was to big, and tried the 46..but it pinged like crazy from a takeoff when it was hot. So i went back to the 48, and the pinging is gone. I checked for intake leaks with wd-40. Nothing. I replaced wires and plugs..also nothing. I am at a loss here. All this talk about Buells being able to power wheelie, and mine not being able to kinda sucks. It seems to run good. Plugs looks good. Just never been able to get the front tire off the ground. Even in first gear. Anyone have anything else I should check? Maybe VOES? Any and all help you can give would be great! Thanks JayB |

What elevation do you live at? Do you have a dyno sheet? A good dyno tune is often the cheapest horsepower you can buy. |

check the clutch, a worn or burnt set of discs will remove wheelies from your bag o'tricks.... |

1) A stock 1997 S-1 will not power wheelie. 2) Aaron can cure that. |

Soften the rear suspension, get rolling a little, like maybe 3500, let off to compress the front and gas it. It'll come up. |

How come a 1998 S1 will power wheelie??? Mine could even in stock form from rolling along in first and second gear the n giving it a handful of throttle. Always worked for me. |

A 1998 S1WL will, a 1997 S1 will not. Don't let anyone bullshit you. This sounds like the "I have a stock S1 that will do 135" tales......

An incline helps. Be going uphill and yes, you can probably "power wheelie". Go up a steep hill and watch out! On the flat, it's a different story with a stock bike. And maybe some people kinda help a wheelie along by compressing the forks momentarily. Works everytime. No clutch.. and one *might* say they power-wheelied... even though they really didn't. My bike is somewhat modified, putting out over 100 hp and it won't consistently "power wheelie" in second gear... although if all the conditions are "right" I might do it all day long in first. But I don't... anymore. I met and went riding with six others yesterday. All kinds of bikes. A couple of racers. No one questioned the power of any of the bikes. There were no drag races... no wheelies... no bragging... no triple digit speeds... and it was some of the most exciting, roller coaster riding I've ever done! So, my point... you don't need "power wheelie" power to have a blast. Just get your bike properly tuned and enjoy it. Steve |

Okay...so you want to throw the incline in? You age BEGGING form me to retell the story of the "generous" girl who demanded the ride on the S-2 in Herrman, MO. And incline will help, a large gal makes it a sure thing. That, ladies andd gents, is the voice of experience. By the way, if you ask me at Bonneville, I will also explain the unique effect that rubenesque gals have on a Cushman 711 Highlander. I appreciate true genius, whatever its form. Court |

Oh my!!! I forgot to mention "weight on the rear"! Yeah.. it can spell instant trouble... even on a riding lawnmower! Okay.. let's hear the story. I can only say that I've come close, but haven't lost anybody! I've gotten an earful a couple of times though. Steve |

I don't bullshit...my dyno sheet tells it all...but I do know that my first 96S1 with the same basic mods would power wheelie. Stab it at 3500 and it would come up fine. I weigh 150 and the mods were homemade hamcan aircleaner, suppertrap, and a rejetted carb. This is one of the only things i disagree with court on:-) It dyno'd at 76hp and 80ft/lbs in Illinois |

I have a 1996 S1, basically stock except for jetting, V&H Slip on, Forcewinder intake. All I do is slowly accelerate to about 3,500 rpm then let off the gas a bit to compress the forks a little then whack it wide open. Usually this will result in a nice wheelie for a decent distance. By the way I am in Denver a mile high I bet it would wheelie real well down at sea level. Mark |

Okay guys, thanks for the replys. What would be a cheaper way to make more power besides a new engine... Maybe the Lightning heads/cam...then I pretty much have the motor up to spec of a 98 S1WL right? Any other thoughts? Anything better for not much more money? (aftermarket heads/cams ?) BTW, I am from Massachusetts. pretty close to sea level. Does my jetting seem off?? Turning the little mixture screw, and watch the idle is tough. Burned my hands a bit (even with leather gloves on) Any trick to this? Didn't really notice the idle getting any better when turning this in or out. I am at 3 turns out right now. My bike has power wheelied before. Not real far...but was still pretty cool. Not sure why it no longer does this. (Thats why I am starting to check things.) Maybe I was lighter weight back then I'll have to check into the clutch. Maybe timing too. Thanks for the help, Wishin' I had more power....and money....JayB |

The 98 S1WL has Thunderstorm heads. |

On my stock S1 (before the T-Storm Heads) all I had to do was let it run to about 3000rpm and roll on the throttle hard and the front would come up. Thats with my fat 230lb ass on the seat too. Eversince the T-Storm heads its much easier to do it and does it pretty easy in second gear too. As of 135 I thats nothing to do, I can do 135 all day long. . . . . . . . . . . Did I mention that my bike is the Canadian Model with a Speedo that reads Kilometers Per Hour. Two things that really screwed me up this past summer was your roads are in MPH and the second is that American Currency is not of different colors. |

That's because only silly Canadians need colors to tell their loony money apart. The rest of us can READ! |

Instructions to power wheelie 1. Get someone with a camera 2. Pin the throttle 3. Dump the clutch

I third that statement! Not to mention, for us visually impaired seniors (read: we forgot our cheater glasses at home) the US Gov put really big numbers on the back side of the bills for us! Incidentally, aren't numerals pretty much universal world wide once you get over the conversion factors. |

How come everyone describing their "stock 1997 S1" concludes by listing the modifications. Let me explain what "stock" means....changing the air cleaner (in 1997 the greatest HP/$ mod) renders a bike much friskier and no longer STOCK. With me here?...I am not saying it's hard to do, just that some of the "stock" stories evolve to urban legend status. Court |

For the visually impaired persons the Canadian currency now has braille on it as well. Maybe Brian & CJ can teach me to read the next time I am in the USA. I like my funny money but its all what your used to using. Damm, you people made me enjoy the USA an awful lot. As for my stock 98S1 (airbox and all) I was always most impressed that it could loft the front wheel in first gear on a hard roll on the throttle. Maybe I am mis-understanding a power wheelie. |

Next year you can return the favor when we come visit you on the Rock. My stock '98 S3-T would power wheelie; my stock 2000 M2 will not. The Thunderstorm heads and Lightning cams sure make a difference.

leaning back on your seat while dooing wheelies will really help you get the front wheel up. Practice, practice, practice. |

My only problem is when I get it up it goes down too fast/easily - can't shift to second gear fast enough!!!! I know I just opened myself up to all kinds of comments but I need a good laugh |
