Thanks Doc, you are making my heart ache and my wallet start to quiver and hurt! As soon as I find a spare $20K there will be a Multi in the garage next to the Uly. That way when I waiting 2 1/2 - 3 months for parts from HD I'll have another cool bike to ride. | ||

Doc love your pictures and ride reports. But I do have a couple concerns. 1 You spend too much time taking pictures of the sides and bottoms of motorcycles. 2 I wont be able to get pictures of the great south west rides you take If Mrs. Greg declines to recover afore mentioned motorcycles. Please be careful out there | ||

Outstanding reporting Dr. Greg! Thanks and keep it up. I love the idea of the Multi 1200, except perhaps for the cost, as others have noted. In addition to a GS comparison, I'd love to see someone try a Triumph Sprint GT when they become available. Not too off-roady, but might fill the sport-toury functions that I end up using my bikes for more than dirt. 135 HP and ABS at about $13k. Has me interested. Sounds interesting to me as well. Is it not imported to the USA? That would be a familiar story... One of these days I'll own one of these. Well, Chad, it took me working the same job for 34 years to buy the darn thing. But the only Ducati/Multistrada forums I've found are not filled with nearly as good folks as there are here. So we'll see... Doc the Red River (short ride for you) gathering is this coming weekend Aug 27-28-29 Meeting at Lifts West Hotel & Condo with a group ride and lunch on Sat. Hope to see you there. The surging complaint you have on the Multistrada (i.e. too lean condition) must be a common issues with Ducs. My friend recently purchased the an 1198 and experienced the same problem. The dealership of course told him that the EPA has Ducati's hands tied and that there is nothing they could do with the stock setup. The dealer said the only way to get rid of the low rpm surging was to purchase a new chip and set of Termi's which only costs $1,800! My friend Cliff was no annoyed with the issue, that he forked over the cash for the mods and low & behold, the problem went away! I don't know if I could have swallowed that pill after just dropping $17k on a brand new bike, but Cliff says the improvement was WELL worth the cost...and that thing now sounds like a raped ape! The price of admission for the "full system/ECM" on the MTS 1200 is more like $2,600. And some owners have made the plunge, only to report that the fueling is not really any improvement. Personally, the "surging" (I'm going to ban that word from my vocabulary very shortly...like right now) is not an issue. And...while I like "quiet" in my old age, the REAL reason I don't want the fancy-shmancy exhaust system is that---after owning a Buell---I'm horrified at the prospect of a huge silver canister hanging off the right side of my bike. Sheesh. The "phony" dual outlet stock system---to me---looks halfway decent. And it's quiet. I think I'll keep it. Thanks Doc, you are making my heart ache and my wallet start to quiver and hurt! I'll get my cut from DNA (Ducati North America) shortly. But...the Uly is a heckuva bike while you're waiting. I enjoyed mine like no other bike before...all 85,000 miles of it. And I STILL enjoy it. The blasted thing is just so much fun to ride. Multi notwithstanding. However, the MTS 1200 can do things the Uly just can't do. That's plain and simple engineering. Please be careful out there Thanks for your concern. I currently only have a total of ten fractures (two sustained on bicycle, not counting 2-week concussion). That's why we wear all that gear. So far the MTS 1200S has given Mrs. Greg a welcome reprieve from rescues. Actually, I think I've got the '06 Uly debugged as well. And I ain't droppin' that Ducati MTS 1200S anytime soon, you can count on that! Had a great ride today, but don't think I'll post another report. Then there's the "SW Buell Rally" which frankly will be problematic for me. Then there's the North Rim Grand Canyon camping trip coming up sometime in the next coupla weeks. Then the East Coast trip sometime during September-October. Thanks for all the kind words and interest. Unfortunately Mrs. Greg and I will be heading back to New Mexico on Friday. Won't get home in time to watch the MotoGP practice (we're online subscriber fanatics). --Doc P.S. (why do I always have a P.S.) Did a 224-mile ride today in both NM and CO. Didn't see as many Harleys, and saw a couple ADV-style bikes (GS 1150s in this case). Saw a couple sportbikes also. Everybody poking along. Although I did witness a poor lady get cited at the top of Wolf Creek Pass by an UNMARKED LEO car. Now that's not fair. I wonder how many states run unmarked cars? NM doesn't, at least. P.P.S. Naturally, I found a place to do some skinny-dippin' on the ride today, and of course I snapped a photo of myself (in a fairly populated area, too!). But I ain't postin' it this time. I'm tired of those stupid black boxes. | ||

NY doesn't anymore after concerns a few years ago with people impersonating cops then raping/robbing people they pull over. They still have unmarked cars, but you will not be pulled over by one. (Message edited by froggy on August 25, 2010) | ||

Doc, I love the Multistrada. I looked at them long and hard. I bought a new 750 Desmo GT back in the early 70's. When it was time I ended up getting the much cheaper 1200GS. This was the first time I saved money by buying a BMW!! | ||

Nice report Doc! I was ready to pull the trigger on a Uly a few months ago but the seller was waiting on parts for the bike before the sale could be completed and I got tired of waiting so I decided with the problem of getting parts from the local dealer I would give up on Buells until Erik can get his new operation up and running. So with that experience I picked up this....  2001 Triumph Tiger The Duc was on my short list but not enough change in my pocket to purchase one. Maybe one of these days I will have a Duc but for now, unless Erik gets back to building Adventure bikes, my next new one will be one of the new dirt oriented Tigers that Triumph is to introduce in 2011. | ||

Fabulous stories & report, Doc. I too was looking at getting a MTS, but got my 06 Uly with 3800 miles for only $5k. Just picked up an 08 1125R with 2500 miles for $5.5k. Still only half the price of the MTS for both! I do like the 1125, though..... I can see where an 1125 Uly would really be cool. | ||

Good prices for good bikes! Congrats to you both. I still enjoy riding the '06 Uly every day on my commute. Maybe it's back to being reliable... I just took a three-day "shakedown cruise" camping trip on the MilleDue, and it did great. May post a ride report on ADVrider.com; I'll mention it here if I do. Then on Monday I leave for a 3-week trip from NM to the East Coast...visit my son in NYC and spend time in New England, etc. May head down to South Carolina and see an old high school buddy. I'll be staying with ADVrider folks and camping as conditions permit. Got something over 4,000 miles on the MilleDue (I like that term better than the sterile "MTS") now and so far so good. --Doc | ||

However, you have to sift through tons and tons of chaff to get to the stuff you really want to read. It's almost TOO big. BadWeb is just right. Targeted forum to targeted users. Don't mind the older style of the layout. It's classic. | ||

The ONLY reason I''ll be posting my East Coast RR on ADV is because it involves a Ducati, and may be of general interest. I've dual-posted most of my Uly RRs to both ADV and BadWeb. Over the years---and I've said this before---I consider BadWeb to be THE most useful, well-behaved m/c forum around. The signal/noise ratio is almost uniformly high. Well, fellas, Dr. Greg is now in New York City! Staying at my son's apartment in Brooklyn, MilleDue in a nearby parking garage. The bike has run flawlessly so far, although the battery in the "active key" is dead. Lasted 2 months! Hope that's not a sign of trouble to come. Gotta buy a couple CR 2032 batteries today. We'll be going to a men's roller derby "bout" in Wallington, NJ tonight. My son is a member of the (undefeated) "New York Shock Exchange" men's derby team (they're playing the "Harm City Homicide") . Prolly bum around NYC on Sunday, then head out Long Island to catch the ferry for CT on Monday. Trip has been great so far; the one exception being heavy rain across the whole of PA. And after crossing the entire state of KS with beautiful weather, I find a TORNADO hit Prospect Park in Brooklyn! Big trees uprooted, etc. Crazy. When I get home (too lazy to do it realtime) I'll be posting a comprehensive RR (with lot of pics) on ADVrider.com. I'll post a link to it here for those interested. --Doc | ||
