Does anyone know if the Hepco Becker ALU Standard panniers fit right into my factory Ulysses racks or do they need to be modified to fit? | ||

They should fit. The Gobi's do. Look at a pic of the back side - it should extend out to fit inside the stock Uly racks. I believe you will have the left case right side issue, which is no problem, as the latches are reversed. | ||

Be careful. If you have Journey bags now, and Journey bag racks (latches to the front)...they might NOT. Well...they'll fit, but you may not be able to use your passenger pegs with the bags on. If you have Outdoorsman bags and racks (latches to the rear with the turn signals relocated further back)...ANY of the HB bags will fit. Because those racks move the bags back about 3" on the bike. I have personally put Outdoorsman bags on Journey racks, and not been able to move or use the passenger pegs because the bags extended too far forward. This is not hearsay or speculation - I've done it with my own two hands. | ||

The Gobi's work with the footpegs down and they can be moved about half way up. I ride solo, so I really don't care. The pegs stay up while riding, even over rough terrain. It's not too big a deal to weld up a latch hook if you have the skills or spend a few bucks to have it done. | ||

Thanks Guys. I travel solo and removed the rear pegs already. Top loaders are just more practical for me camping. | ||

Tires are Avon Distanzias. Work pretty well off road and on the tarvy. I've streamlined my packing a bit, but not much. The Uly is a mule. | ||

No apologies needed, I just want a rack to cannibalize so I can fab something for my S2. It has saddlebags, but the Uly always gets the nod for long trips because of the third bag...be nice to take the old '2 on a trip once in a while! | ||

I tried to mount the alu hepco-beckar side cases at the dealer and they diddn't fit because of the rearseat handlebars interfearing. If you remove them then no problem. | ||

Same problem I had when I put on the Pelican 1440's. No problem with the Gobi's. Most top loaders with removable lids should fit. | ||

Itileman: What Tail Pack/ Rack Pack are you hauling there in your picture? Looks enormous. Nice loading job by the way. How do you keep from popping wheelies all the time? Is your tankbag full of lead-weights? | ||

The "Top Box" is an Ozark Trails cooler, about $30.00 at Wmt. I don't keep much weight up top/out back. Heavy stuff is in the Gobi's and the entire load, including the Gobi's, is about 80#. The cooler has a hard bottom and rigid sides. I use NRS straps to attach it to the triple tail and luggage rack tubing. Also use the straps on the duffle. It has a zipper top, two velcro easy access panels and came with two aluminum water bottles. A light front end is good for off road.  | ||

Itileman, how well/badly does you X model Uly respond, to being heavily loaded as shown in your photograph. Is your high speed stability, so crucial for passing slower/holiday traffic, badly compromised ? I run an 04 DL1000 Vstrom with 41 litre Zega panniers and between the oem aerodynamics (horrid) and the Touratech cases, the front end is unweighted dramatically. I might consider purchasing a friend's 09 XB12X somewhere down the road, but I can't gamble on another bike that won't retain stability when loaded for bear ! With the Uly's lack of fairing/bodywork, I've recently noted owners praising it's behavior in high wind situations, also important to me with being on the Canadian prairies, the Strom is like flying a kite in said conditions. I will consider a used 08-2010 Uly, only if they cope well with heavy loads and high winds, I can't afford to make a mistake again with my touring bike choice. Otherwise it looks like a 2nd gen FJR1300 or a return to an HD dresser down the road and I'd prefer something lighter, narrower between the knees and mechanically simpler. Any feedback from overloading Uly owners, in regards to stability at speed and behavior in windy conditions appreciated ! 996DL | ||

Loaded with most of the weight down low and forward in the passenger position, there is little difference in handling mountain twisties and Montana's winds at speeds under 85 mph. Sometimes I forget that there is even a load on the back until I get off the bike (09 XB12XT). I had a set of Pelican 1440's on for a while, but they were way too big and caused handling problems in the wind. The Gobi's are great, but I can envision that the Touratechs might be an issue. I didn't like the top rack as it sits up way too high and too far back. The tail wagging the dog, if you will. I road some wicked twisties on a trip to Yaak with Chains45 last week who rides an X, but packs a load like I do. No issues with either bike. They are a load on gravel coming down a mountain, but it's manageable. I can do 900 mile days on the tarvy in comfort packed like that. I like it a whole lot better than the Road King I traded for it and don't ever see myself going back to a cruiser. | ||

Hepco-Becker Gobi cases. Mine came off a KTM, but they fit an XT without modification. You may have to leave your passenger pegs down to install them, then push them back up about halfway. I have no issues with that and they don't flop down when riding. Only difference is that the left case goes on the right side & vice-versa. The Gobi's come up in the Flea Market on Advrider once in a while for around $400.00 for the set with keys. Absolutely love the cases - IMHO, these are what should have come stock on the Uly. | ||

996dl , I used to own a DL650 and it was horrible with the cases loaded and heavy crosswinds. I had raised the triple clamps a bit and it still was scary in crosswinds. Thought I'd get blown over a bridge once and under a big rig another time. The Ulysses does not have this problem. I do get some buffetting following pickup trucks at times, but it's rider induced. I just relax my grip and arms and it's fine. | ||

Beached, someone on Advrider has fitted the HB aluminum panniers, but had to modify the grab handles as the lids could not open fully with them there. I'll try to find the link. | ||

I have an 09 X and wasted TONS of money buying the H&B Alum. Exclusives. They did however mount right up to the racks after only a few short hours with the angle grinder, Dremmel, and hand files. Everything about them sucks. After that hey did work great for a week or two, until the 10 cent 1/8" cast alum lock that is actually responsible for holding the bag on to the rack failed on me. I have given up on trying to get the piece replaced because H&B as a company sucks a bag of dicks. The QC or should I say the lack of QC is sickening. They don't hold water so if used as a cooler they leak. The hinges are all put on crooked as are the (extra weak) hasps. The rubber gaskets fell out after no time as well. I would recomend trying out something from Touratech. If you are anywhere near NJ I'd be happy to show you my bad investment (that I waited over a year to get) in person. Admittedly I'm a bit of a stickler but these bags fell so far short of the mark and their cost was so much above the mark it's effin' criminal. (Message edited by skinstains on October 03, 2010) |
