Did my first ride with the bike. So far I love it my FZ was a great bike but has nothing on the Uly. So I have already started the mods and one high on my list after a few rides is the sound. I have spent a fair amount of $$ on GPS, mounts and rear tire ect. So is there a cheap mod I can do to the stock can to get a good V-Twin sound out of it?? I don't want crazy lound but right now it does not have the soul of a Vtwin. I also don't want to take away from the smooth EFI tune it has or MPG. I am a welder by trade so can a guy cut in another pipe to make duels?? Has this been done?? Pics?? |

You are in luck, being that you have welding skills, you can cut open the stock pipe and make it however you please. Also, when properly tuned, you will have more smoothness and better MPG. Here is a link on some other people making their own exhausts http://www.buelletinboard.com/forums/showthread.ph p?t=8924 Use the search, both on here and Google and you will find many guides. Pick up an Erik Buell Racing Race ECM too while you are at it. |

I did a simple straight forward cut out, and right side tail pipe. I was doing it to help vent a very hot pipe situation at the time. It turned out to sound really good down low, and it cannot be heard from fifty mph up, so it is still great for long distance riding. It has made no difference in performance, no flat spot anywhere in the rpm band, no noticeable help either, just a little more noise down low.
I was in a bit of a rush so I only took a few pics, this hole was trimmed up to fit.
This was part of a scrap gas filler neck from a box truck.
I trimmed the tip at an angle after this picture. It turned out to be about a half inch to long at the tip because it has a nice little flat spot where it ground off when I touched the pegs on a corner. Total time was about a half hour and cost was just some weld wire and gas. About as cheep as a mod gets. |

or you could just wire it open. . |

Etennuly--Was going to do something like that but do I need or should I take some of the guts out inside the pipe and weld it back up to get more sound?? |

Snow, no need for any further change for a nice little deep rumble down low. I have tried it with the exhaust valve wired open and it makes it a nice stereo rumble that for me is a little louder than what I wanted. The pipe I added in the rear chamber sounds much like the Buell race pipe that I had on my 9X, but not quite as loud. It is just a short cut that relieves some of the exhaust pressure and heat from the can. There is a blue print of the muffler in the service manual where you can see how the flow works. I would think that using a larger diameter and shorter pipe would make it louder and potentially get into the area of relieving too much pressure that may affect performance. I did not want to go there, where I would be having to do extra tuning to keep it running smooth. The other thing is, it was an experiment, easily reversed by cutting the welds off from the pipe and welding a patch back into the hole that would restore my rusty muffler to it's former self. |

I will post up pics here soon but I just got done with the mod. Made a stop at a muffler shop and picked up a short sweep off a old tailpipe for free. Painted everything with high temp black and it looks better than the factory side and sounds GREAT!! |

Ok here are some pics was clean but took it out for a few rides. If you don't have the $$ for a new can or want to spend your $$ on other mods this turned out perfect. Sounds great not to loud but it has a good rumble to it. If you don't have a welder I bet you can talk to your local muffler shop and they could use a old tailpipe like I did and throw them a $50 bill and you would be taken care of. I was in a hurry and this took me about 3hrs from start to finish with a trip into town for paint most of the time was taking it off and putting it back on. Ow ya yes there is only one clamp now I had a fight with the other and I won it now is on the way to the scrapyard I hope one will do. (Message edited by SNOW_JW on July 31, 2010) |

Here's how our muffler works: Valve Closed Valve Open

I guess, to my way of thinking, the mod looks identical to the 'Valve Open' position, but reversed. Right? The mod would seem to be negated when the muffler is in the 'Valve Open' position. Why not simply wire the muffler valve open, and accomplish more-or-less the same thing? . |

On my run today I played the valve and wired it open and it was a bit to much for me. Also I put it up to the same bike in a 60mph rolling start when I first got the uly and now with the mod and there is some more power not allot but I was able to see that some power was gained (Message edited by SNOW_JW on August 01, 2010) |

Snow - Any updates on how you like this mod after a month or so? Thinking about doing this to mine. I've had both the latus and the jardine on my Uly and they're both a little louder then I'd like. |
