Bad news - speedo stopped working on Saturday. Good news - new speed sensor fixed the problem. Interesting news - the speed sensor I took out was the new part number (74431-01) - I had read that there have been none of this part number that have failed. If that's so, consider me first. It's an -01 part number, but I don't know if it's the original or not - it's definitely not a recent replacement if it's not, but there's less than 18kmi on the bike so I'm a little worried it's going to start eating these things. I replaced with 74431-01B, so we'll see how it goes. |

"FYI", on PN 74431-01 ... The -01 means this was the first year this part was put in service ... The high case "B" indicates the first product improvement of this part ... If you do not change the transmission lubricant every 5K miles to get the fine metal wear out the sensor will go bad from the fine metal ... |

Ummmm, B is the *second* revision of the part...A comes before B. and trans oil change interval has NOTHING to do with failure rate. I've replaced speed sensors on bikes with 20 miles, among the hundreds that I've replaced. They're a high-failure-rate part (hence two product revisions). |

Jos51700: You are correct, as "B" would be the 3rd up-date ... ie: the sensor is in effect a magnet which will collect metal ... If you run the primary chain too tight(and/or drive belt), you get more metal which will not make any difference when you change the trans. fluid ... and -01 is the model year in which a part is introduced. For example, a -94B is a part that came out on the '94 models, and is the third version (second revision): -94, -94A, -94B. |

If you are killing sensors, put a 5v regulator on the thing before eating another one. Just cut up an $8 cell phone car charger or something. Its not difficult... |
