I have been lurking around here since early 2009 and have been able to solve all my problems with the search function. Thanks to all for all the good information found here. This website is vital for me to enjoy my 2009 XT. I know that I am preaching to the converted, but this is the most fun that I have had on a motorcycle in a long time. I now have the dreaded rear wheel bearing failure and am still under warranty. I removed the wheel and went to the dealer to try and scope out the repairs. The short story is that only the bearings are failed, the wheel is OK and therefore only the bearings will be replaced. I am looking for advice on how to convince them that I want the proper repair with the 2010 wheel and bearing setup. Anyone got any ideas on how to achieve this? | ||

The best way to convince them would be write them a check for ~$400 and ask them to do the upgrade.  Seriously, unless you've got an AMAZINGLY good dealer, I don't see much chance of you getting a free upgrade. I'd suggest that you just nicely ask your service manager to check into it and see if there's any way HD would cover it, since it seems to be a known weak point with the bikes. If HD says "no", ask the dealer if he'd give you a discount on the upgrade parts if you pay for them. | ||

Yea ask them nicely, and hope for the best. Other than that, ride the piss out of it, and if they fail again, perhaps you will have gone longer without realizing it and have wheel damage  | ||

Thanks guys. I should add that I am at 33,000 Kanadian miles (KM) or 20500 miles. I was out for a rip Tuesday and noticed a wobble/wiggle while doing a high speed pass around a semi. Scary. I have the bearing grease dribble spray marks on the bearing and sprocket as pictured on the bearing failure threads. The bearings are not in stock and are 2 weeks away. Of course they will not do a warranty repair without the whole bike being there, and so as I planned, my bike is in my garage. I am tempted to ride it "around the block" until the wheel is damaged. Without this forum I would not have known what to look for, or what the correct fix is. | ||

Next time, make sure they fail when scooting down the expressway at 80 MPH. You will get a new 2010 wheel, swing arm and all the rest. Very simple actually. | ||

The best way is to simply buy the wheel (which may or may not be possible) and haggle over install. I enjoy the peace of mind the 2010 brings. | ||

FYI I just received my 2010 wheel from American Sportbike ( a sponsor here and very highly regarded)- he may have some in stock.... took me less then a month. | ||

Yes, it's available in Black, and several other colors. If you do a search here on BB&D you can find all the part #'s you need. I ordered mine from Chicago HD online, saved a cool 20% that way. I'd have bought from Al at American Sport Bike if he'd had the black one though. | ||

Does anyone know if the 2010 wheel is available in black? American Sportbike only shows the magnesium color. I believe that only the 2010 X wheel is the magnesium color, while the lighter duty 2010 wheels in other colors including black are from models such as the XT . As long as you don't want or need the heavier duty version, you have a choice of colors. | ||

I just received my '10 X wheel from American Sport Bike. According to Al the X wheel,since it comes as a kit,is less expensive than the other colors,as you have to order bearings and axle separately from the wheel. I think the difference was about 80 bucks or so. I can live with different wheels! | ||

$80 covers a lot of spray paint for changing the color, and touching it up if it chips... | ||

I have been talking to my dealer, and got the good news today. Heritage Harley Davidson in Edmonton Alberta is repairing my bike with the 2010 rear wheel under warranty. I am so happy. It has taken some time, but the result is worth it. Kudos to Heritage Harley. |
