Finally!

Yamaha is going to bring the 1200 Super Tenere to the US dealers in 2012. A good alternative to whats available in the large displacement ADV-Touring class. I'd like mine in red and white, please!

for that kind of cash you could buy a Uly

Sorry, I am a naysayer, it is just another motorcycle, where is the innovation?

I'll keep my American built, air-cooled, 0-60 < 3 sec, 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty, 475 pound, 2009 Uly XT.

Be interesting to see if they put a dent in BMW's sales. At least I have a really good Yamaha dealer here if I ever want one.

Not to rain on your parade, Hunn, but I read a recent review of the bike and the reviewer was less than impressed. It was rather plain vanilla and not exciting. The Beemer completely outclassed it in every category.

Touchy, touchy everybody! I did not say I'm going to sell my Uly to buy a 1200 Super Tenere. I love my Uly to death, going to hang on to it till there are no more parts to be had. But I would like a bike thats just (-I almost said " a tad more reliable"-, that really would have p....d some people off here) needs a little less preventative maintenance, get on it and go and not to worry.
I'm glad, Flwindsurf, you have a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty, you are going to need it.

0-60 < 3 seconds??

How are you getting that time? Froggy couldn't do it with a race ecm.

Hunn, it's not touchy touchy, it's just that it is just another bike, there is no innovation to it. Might as well be a 80's XL500 or somthing like that, it is the same bike as the last 40 years of bikes, single or double down tube frame, parallel twin, big single, fuel sitting up on top of the engine, WHY are the other manufactures not using ZTL brakes? simpler, lighter, better?
It is the same as the rest, sure you might have fuel injection, sure it might spin to 14,000 RPM, sure it might have bags and a two up seat, but it is the "same-o-same-o"
When something really "New" comes out wake me up, but everything else right now is just a re-exercizing of 1970 in new plastic, maybe a little different frame geometry to help handle the higher speeds.

I am really interested in what is in the works with Erik Buell, what we see now are actually designs from 30 years ago, it just took 20 years for the parts manufacturers to come up with the process to build the designs.
Look to the future, not to the past, the future is what is not available today.

Don't get me wrong, it is a nice bike, but so is the KTM 990, it looks JUST LIKE the KTM, that looks just like the Transalp.
You say potato, I say potato, it is the same.

I'm not a pro rider. I am sure someone that had practice or knew what they were doing could easily clear the 4 second mark. 3 seconds is tough even on an 1125R.

(I said race computer in that other post, not race ecm. Huge difference : ) )

We have a good Yamaha dealer here in my hometown so maybe in a few years I'll be looking for something to replace the Uly.
But WTH no under exhaust and big old gas tank way up high.Just like my old 88 KLR and I don't care for the saddle bags.

I don't care for the saddle bags

That's a problem that comes up on most of these bikes. The BMW's have that issue, too. By sticking that pipe out one or both sides of the tail, they reduce the capacity of the panniers and force them to be awkward sizes and shapes.

Granted, I'm not 100% in love with the clamshells on my XT, but they're equally sized. Maybe I just like symmetry.

At least it's "only" $13,900 and not $19,999 like the Multi.
150 rear tire?
Linked braking and ABS is a plus I guess.

The video on Yammy]s web page was excellent. All told, I'm quote sure this is an excellent bike. Too bad the Uly couldn't "evolve" into the contender to take on the adventure touring market.

A decade too late, Yamaha brings to the U.S. the bike that would have fulfilled my fantasy to be Stéphane Peterhansel.

At least Yam fed us a steady diet of Star cruisers to hold us over until they could get around to letting us taste the Super Tenere.

I was just in the Yamaha dealer to pick up an inner tube.

They said the bike would be here in time for next riding season. I assumed they meant spring of 2011.

They accepted my buddies check as a down payment on one.

That video was a joke. Where is the excitement that (I'm guessing) they were looking for. Does nothing for me. Not sure I even like the looks of the bike. Throttle Control sounds a lot like Slow off the line! I like the torque of the Uly and I did not get the sense that this bike was going to put out the same type of numbers or seat of the pants feeling like you know you have a big ol kick ass engine underneath you. I'm with mnrider. Now if we could see something like conchop put together then we are on the right track!

As I was sitting here watching TV, waiting for Earl to show up, it dawned on me that I may have been a little harsh with my comments regarding this new bike. I would like to Apologize to anyone I may have offended. Keep in mind I have not read any of the posts after mind so I will do so know. Again my apologies.

the Multistrada or Tiger 800 are higher of my list of dream bikes.

I have ridden the multi, its like a Uly with 150 bhp to play with.... very nice. What Erik would have done?

The Tiger 800 looks like being a pretty good adventure bike..... and its British

How is 150rwhp good on the Multistrada but was too much on a 1125 ULY? I for one would have welcomed it but it was way too much for many of you here. Horse power is controlled with the right hand.

Late to the debate but, I'm glad that the adventure segment(in the us)is getting another bike. I do think that it should of been on this side of the pond awhile ago to make the most impact on the market. When the sales numbers don't meet Yamaha Excec. expectations they'll say it's the wrong bike for the U.S. market when in reality it will be poor timing on their part.

Maybe HD will see another manufacturer jumping into the market and decide they need to a piece of it. Then they take a 1200 cc sportser motor and put it in an innovative chassis and sell that.

Oh wait.

Nevermind.

They shot that Tenere video in Utah. Those mountain roads are 10 minutes from my home, and I ride that road around the lake (UT 189 / Deer Creek Reservoir) and through the tunnels for my daily commute. My Uly and I both love it!

If you are in the neighborhood, give me a shout and we can go reproduce the riding in the video.

I am glad to see the 1200 Super Ten coming to the USA. Strong sales of that may convince Yamaha and others to bring in more adventure style bikes.

I personally would have rather seen the XT660Z brought in but I understand why they are starting with the 1200.

Can't wait to hear some real world (US consumer) reviews of the new Yamaha when it finally arrives.

The Yammy is all the rage over on Advrider. I'd have to ride one to know how I felt about it, but I think another bike on the market is always good. Competition motivates improvements. It costs more than I thought it would, but it will be a low volume bike for the U.S. market I think. Whether we here on Badweb like cruisers or not, they dominate sales. Sport tourers and adventure bikes just don't sell in big numbers here. Really, the GS has had very little competition. There is the KTM Adventure and the two V-Stroms, and to some degree the Uly and the former Multi which to me were much more street oriented. The Uly is gone, but now we have the new Multi (which still seems pretty street oriented) and the Super Tenere. I wonder if sales will justify all of them, or if some will go the way of the Uly.
