I have an 08 Uly with the fan logic that runs the fan when the bike shuts down (09 logic). The Erik Buell Racing ecm can be ordered with either the 09 or 10 fan logic. I know there are pros and cons to either but which one do you think is better overall? I installed the ebr ecm after requesting the 09 logic and they got it wrong. They have offered to fix the ecm for no charge if I send it back. I can't decide which one to go with.

I wish I could run the '10 logic in my '06...As it is, I think Michael did some tweaking to my trigger temps and the fan seems to run a little more than with the stock ECM...and the bike seems happier regardless of temps (and I've been out in 100+ ambient a LOT this season).

People will hem and haw about fan life, replacing a fan, whatever. I could care less. If it helps the engine live longer I'm all over it.

Engines are more expensive than fans, and we have yet to see data showing the new logic kills fans faster anyway...

Leaking rocker box gaskets kill fans.

I have my '06 with the comfort kit and now a '10. After adding the comfort kit to the '06 I had to add the front section of Odie's heat blanket. I got a lot more heat on my inner right thigh when the fan was not running. Odie's blanket help a bunch in that area.. but as some others have pointed out.. when the fan it not running it may actually imped air flow???

I've ridden both in temps approaching 100 this summer... I've decided I much prefer the new fan logic.

I waited for months after installing the comfort kit before getting the new logic... I didn't know if I liked the idea of the fan running all the time.

I don't know about fan life or engine life, but the new logic definitely helps with rider comfort. My rides this summer have been much more comfy and less sweaty than they were last summer and last fall after I installed the comfort kit. With the comfort kit, the new fan logic, and the front section of Odie's blanket, heat is a non-issue while rolling above 15 mph. Below that, it still gets hot for sure.

The only problem I have with the new logic is that the fan doesn't run at shutdown anymore, so I don't get the stares from passerby's in the parking lots anymore. I miss not being able to tell them that that noise is my flux capacitor cooling...

I always tell them that it's the turbo spinning down. A couple of guys looked like they believed it!

A long light on a hot day after a hot run...and the fan is quiet...freaky to me. I think the motor is hot especially after hearing the fan shut down as I come up to stop. Euly

Etennuly, your bike is cool.

Took a ride with my wife today to Washington DC. 150 mile round trip. The fan ran at most stop lights and at shut down on M street. 08XT Kit & Flash.
102 at the bank on the way home.

This is the response I got back from Erik Buell Racing regarding the fan logic;

Frank,
The updated strategy is identical to 2010 production bikes. It is also referred to as the “rider comfort kit” for Ulysses.

Without going into the minutia, the fans work quite differently. Basically operating on the go, and quiet when the bike is still. Of course the fans will kick in when the bike is running warm regardless if it’s moving or stationary.

The point of the update was to improve rider comfort, cool the bike properly, and to not make it sound like a 737 at key off or sitting still.

Does this mean the fans running whenever the bike is traveling at 15mph or more?

Leaking rocker box gaskets kill fans.

and broken/non-running fans cause leaking rocker box gaskets.

What if you did this; have the fan's power somehow controlled by the red kill switch next to the throttle, so that when you shut down the bike with that switch, the fan shuts down - regardless if the ECM is telling it to run or not. Then when you go to start the bike, everything is back to normal. This wouldn't help those who have already changed over to the 2010 comfort flash, but it would address some concerns with the other Ulys, who like the current fan mapping strategy except for the fact it runs after you turn it off. Would that be difficult to rig up(looking at the electrical masterminds in this group)?

Uly dude, if you shut off the bike via the handlebar mounted run/stop switch the fan does not run. I always wondered why so many people complained about the fan running after shutdown. If I didn't want my fan to run after a ride I just killed the bike via the run/stop switch. Now that I know Buell is doing just that with 2010 models I would prefer that to having the fan run while the bike is in motion. I wish there was some way to determine the projected run time in hours the fan was manufactured to endure. When a product like the fan is designed it is given a designed operating period.

Really? I could swear mine runs even after I use that kill switch. I'll pay closer attention the next few times. Thanks.

That is what keeps me from freaking even with the fan off on a hot day at the stop. I have heard it on once at a stop so I know it works. Cooler here in the NW.

It does, but if you click your switch back to run position it will kill the fan. This is a really bad idea in my opinion. I would hate to buy a used bike from someone who did this as I believe it will greatly shorten engine life.

Having had an '06 X and now have a '10 X, I much prefer the new fan logic. We just took a trip to the Dragon area a few weeks ago and on the way down the temps were between 95 and 104-have to say that along with the comfort kit and the new fan logic, the heat was manageable-still there, but manageable.

Before the latest flash, my fan would run with the kill switch. I always use the kill switch first.

I'm comfortable in 100+ temps with the new fan logic on my 09, but it's had that flash done since new so I have nothing to compare it to.

I wish there was a flash for those of us who want to be comfortable AND want the bike to sound like a 737 when turned off : D
