Short Bike history. I replaced my pistons and rings last weekend due to a weeping head gasket. It ran Ok last week, not 100%, a bit of popping, and a leaky rear pushrod tube. Fixed the leak on Tuesday, pulled rocker box off reused gaskets with a smear of gasket goo(not O2 friendly stuff). Since then its been running pretty crapily, getting worse everyday. I have checked Intake and exhaust for leaks twice, had a minor exhaust leak, fixed that.Reset TPS. Then today it ran utter shite. It nearly died at the lights on the way to work,Idling down about 500rpm. Had to rev the guts out of it, slipping the clutch to get going. Sounded like it was pinging like f'n crazy. The death sort of rattle ya never want to here. It surges, pops, backfires below 4K like its running on one cyl, then starts pulling hard above 4K. I pulled the plugs out as soon as i got home this evening, the front plug was a nice tan colour and average hotness, the rear was whiteish(lean?) and HOT... Did i screw the O2 sensor?. Didn't even think about O2 friendly sealant(). Could the Temp sensor be stuffed?. Any hints?. What else could it be?. I might turn off the O2 sensor and try that?. |

just checking the bike out now with ECM spy. The joys of wireless... AFV 99%. TPS 5.1degrees 5.9% No Fault codes?. |

If only the rear plug was white, maybe you have an intake leak at the rear cylinder. I had something similar happen where the front plug only was white, here is what my intake seal looked like.

I thought if it was the rear intake leaking it would've changed the AFV?. I just changed out the plugs, turned off the O2 sensor and it still runs baaaaad down low. But starts cleaning up the higher you rev it?. its definately missing..... (Message edited by nallac on August 30, 2010) |

Just reading some searched posts... Could it be a Bad TPS reset?.Not done at proper operating temp?. Will have to try a reset tomorrow if it'll warm up long enough. |

It sounds like your issues started after you did quite a bit of mechanical work on the bike. I wonder if something was missed in that area. Or you might have "disturbed" some of the wiring while you're doing all that work. I doubt if an intake leak could cause such a havoc. I suppose a compression test could rule out some of the possibilities. |

Just sounds like an intake air leak, have to give it lots of throttle to overcome the lean condition. Getting the manifold in the just the right spot takes care. |

Checked the compression this morning, was good within 5-10psi of each other. Did find a slight air leak on TPS sensor. Just about to try and fix that now. |

TPS sensor is electric. How is it leaking? |

Must of been leaking past the throttle shaft.Fixed that and it still running bad. I found its not running on the front cyl down low, pulled plug wire, got a hell of a ZAP...still got a sore hand,so has good spark Checked injectors, plenty of gas out of them, swapped them over, still the same. Currently have stripped manifold(seals look good) exhaust, front rocker covers for inspection. Valves are still in one piece and going up and down... So what is going on?????????????????? I've got a 1000k ride planned to the Cold Kiwi http://www.coldkiwi.co.nz/index.html this weekend so need it fixed. (Message edited by nallac on August 31, 2010) |

Is the front injector squirting? Have you checked the timing? |

yes i checked the injectors, and swapped front to rear. Haven't checked timing. Will check that when i put her back together. And my hand still hurts from where i got zapped by the coil.......... |

Yip that sounds about right JR. Did a leak down test this arvo all good. Found air leaking past intake butterfly?. Resealed where TPS mounts, not sure what if any thing to do with throttle cable side?. Will be taking bike to town tomorrow to get coil check.Lead checks out fine. It has spark,it has gas but has no front running cylinder......????. just wondering if spark breaks down under load?. |

oh and to add insult to injury as i was taking the X1 to a mates Workshop to do the leak down test i broke the drive belt... luckily it was only a few hundred meters from my place,Still not fun pushing it tho. |

Have you pulled the plugs out and checked them for spark against the cylinders? It's rare but I have heard of plugs going bad. If you've got spark and fuel you should be getting detonation. If not it's in the timing. IMHO. |

i had a injector lower o-ring leaking at the manifold at the rear cylinder. it caused it to run just like you're sayin. 99 x-1 **i replaced the intake gaskets a couple times before i figured it out!** (Message edited by nukeblue on September 01, 2010) |

Have check plugs, have had 3 different ones in there, sandblasted them clean and gapped them every time before reinstalling. Checked plug leads good resistance. Swapped injectors around, currently have them swapped over. Reset timing last night, was slightly retarded,1/2-1 degree max. Have checked for intake/injector leaks multiple times(with white spirits) have lenghtened the fuel line so tank can sit on tail.Giving good acess to check. none to be found....bar one on the throttle butterfly shaft. So currently i'm thinking its either, Coil,(weak spark?), or Cam sensor(bad or not consistant timing), TPS,looks good going by ECM spy, tracks up and down good with throttle movement. ETS, engine temp looks fine on ECM spy, temp goes up nicely. |

well everything is working. They did find with there flash new tester than the front cyl was firing before the injector was pulsing?... So it could it be the cam sensor or the ECM?. |

I am having similar problems with my 2001 X1 i think it's the cps is there anyway of testing the CPS ? the green sealant on the connections (sensor end of lead) is soft like chewing gum the pot itself is compressibility soft to touch does this mean it has cooked itself ? re-reading old threads , am i right in it will not show a fault code on ecm spy i have a massive misfire between 3-4k above 4k it pulls like a rhino with it's balls on fire have checked .. H/T leads plugs(changed two sets) coil resistance i renewed the 02 sensor , which was code 13 that ecm showed as fault connectors and low tension leads i have also renewed the inlet rubbers i think that CPS misfiring could cause the 02 sensor to read wrong , then giving that as a fault code..but unsure , any ideas (Message edited by totalnutah on September 26, 2010) |

Total: yes the TPS sensor is a "pot" and one of the 3 leads is the "wiper" or variable resistance terminal NOTE the T.P.S. the C.P.S.share the +5v and common ( -) connections the wiper should be voilet yellow check resistance (ohms) between that pin and any ohter in the shell the resistance will vary with grip position, DO NOT REMOVE THE SENSOR FROM THE TB UNLESS YOU HAVE A WORKING ECM SPY SET UP, OR HAVE ACCESS TO IT IF you move the tps sensor you have destroyed the calibration and it must be reset. the cam position output is green with white, I would re check the condition of the wiring at the connectors, and check 1 thing at a time and confrim that that item is not at issue, the o2 sensor coding needs to be rectified first then dig deeper if needed. the o2 is seprate from the CPS, and should not effect it that being said a look at the cup and the sensor is justifyable. those sensors tend to work or not, and they are pretty well shielded, the cups have been known to crack at the mounting hole usualy this causes all sorts of mayhem. ecm spy is one way of connecting to the computer to check the sensors. Well i have mine running on two finally. Replaced the Intake seals again, and then replaced em for the third time with James seals. It was an intake leak..along with a dicky injector. i tested and tested and tested for leaks, couldn't find any...then realised you need the bike above 1600rpm to properly check. Its nearly running at 100%,i still have the injectors swapped front to rear, the AFV is currently at 127.4%. I have tried reseting it to 100%,the bike won't run at that so reset it to 127%. Runs strong, but the front plug is a little richer. I'm dropping the injectors off tomorrow to get checked/cleaned.With any luck they'll come up fine so i don't have to replace em at NZ$120+each. I've been posting here, http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/593916.html?1284494661 I can't believe it was a intake leak...... all this fault finding and it was as simple as replacing the seals again, with lots of gasket goo this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, (Message edited by nallac on September 28, 2010) |

well i had the injectors cleaned/checked. The front one is flowing less,12ml's per minute @5k rpm. Rear is flowing 72ml's Front is flowing 60ml's. Both at 5k rpm. I have ordered a new injector. With any luck it'll be the end of mu saga. Might have to get the new one flowed to check the specs between the one current good one. |

FMJ,they put them thru the cleaning cycle/bath twice to no avail for the bad one, they didn't charge me for the cleaning on the dodgy injector. |
