So, over the past 2 weeks, my CR has had several false shifts. The last one scared the tar out of me. Usually its around 2nd, i was cruising in 2nd at about 40 mph, I see a car ahead of me and I want to pass it. I crack the throttle, and i hear my engine winding up as I do not accelerate at all... Another time it got stuck between 4th and 5th and was revving a lot then not revving it was wierd. I have never experienced this on another bike. Looks like a warrenty weekend. |

Crobby, That sounds like something you need to have checked out... I've only experienced a false shifts a couple of times and it's always happened when changing gears. What you first describe sounds like it's slipping out of gear. |

Were you downshifting to 1st for the pass? Do you have any foot to shifter contact at any time other than shifting? When you do shift, do you use enough force to reach the shift levers end of travel quickly? (Message edited by aseecobra on September 01, 2010) |

Did you happen to notice if the gear display was still displaying the gear you were in... I suspect you had other things on your mind but it'd be interesting to know.. |

I get hung up shifts between 5th and 6th on occasion if I do not give it a full throw with the toe. The rest of the range I can just barely toe the lever and it snicks into gear...but 5th to 6th I have to make sure I fully engage the shifter. It's probably not the way it should be, but I've adapted. I can't see the dealer tearing my bike apart over it. Now if the shifter gets stuck between gears it'll be time for some service. |

I have had an occasional bad 5-6 shift if I do not make a good hard pull on the shifter but otherwise it shifts so fast sometimes I don't even know I did it --- feel the clutch lever, think about the shifter, bang I am in the next gear Rick |

I occasionally experience mis-shifts on my bike, but I can virtually always blame myself for not applying enough force; particularly from 2 to 1 and 1 to 2. Once I was rapidly decelerating using engine braking and mis-shifted from 2 to 1 into Neutral. When I realized, I had even less time/space to slow down and kicked it into 1st with only half the clutch pressure. I sheared 5 teeth clean off the belt! Fortunately my preferred dealer had a belt and, miraculously, had time that afternoon to swap it. Unfortunately, I had one more stop to make a few towns over at my friend Nick's place. On the way over there, I chewed up 3 more teeth when passing some slow cars all at once (got up over 100mph), but the 3 teeth remained on the belt and I could feel them cramming through the front sprocket each rotation. Pulled into a church a mile or so later and asked somebody there if I could borrow some scissors. I did so and snipped the three chewed up teeth clean off the belt to avoid unraveling it even more. Took it real easy until Nick & I rode over (he rides a BMW R1200ST) to the shop and they swapped in my new belt. So now we know that the belt can still convey the bike with 8 teeth in a row missing. Whew! |

did you have to shift it back into 2nd when you noticed the issue? |

I pulled the clutch in and let it out again and it seemed to reingage. |

Thing is i wasent shifting, it kicked me out of gear as I was going to pass a car. I was in 2nd, and had been for the better part of a mile. |

Maybe check your clutch fluid level? Definite issue somewhere... R |

Can you reproduce it? Cruise in 2nd with light load, then throttle up as if passing a car again. If so, you're probably looking at a bad gear engagement dog(s). If not, was likely just a little bit of a lazy shift on the 1-2 that time. Enough to keep it engaged, but not fully. I thought the 1125's had undercut dogs to prevent that, but will defer to someone who knows specifically. |

I agree with Zacks Rounded shifter dogs. Major bummer. I may have to consider using the clutch more, had a Sporty that did that from 3rd back down to 2nd under hard load. Still managed to keep an FJ1200 behind me thru a couple miles of twisties, throwing LOTS of sparks. Z |

Until you can get the fault to repeat on command it's a waste of time to bring it in for service. Inevitably the tech will not be able to reproduce the fault. Been there...you just lose out on riding time while the bike sits around in their shop. |

I have also found myself shifting too lightly and I easily find neutral each time. It is just to easy to do that when shifting at a quick pace. I have found myself at fault every time it happens. |

my trans works great if i'm shifting on normal or hard acceleration, and shift quickly. now when i let off the gas a little early and try to shift it simply won't shift. it stays in the same gear, every time. like if i go to decel then try & grab the next gear ain't happening! i've found (with my bike & riding) that the more i try to figure out whats "wrong" it just gets worse lol. if i just go out & ride everything works just fine. i'm not saying there's nothing wrong with your bike though, there might be. i also noticed the buzz at 5,000 rpm. mine does it pretty bad. it's done it since new and now has 2,000 miles on it so i'm not gonna worry about that anymore either. the thick gel grips from asb help with that |

Nukeblue: what oil is in your bike? Sounds like your oil should be checked and/or changed. Oh, and don't use that Syn3 sh!t. Use a quality full synthetic. (Message edited by chameleon on September 09, 2010) |

i've had to add about a half qt since my first change at 500 miles with syn-3 but i believe it's full, but it's really hard to get an accurate reading! i plan to switch to silkoleen 15-50 VERY soon.... |

I agree that it's hard to tell when the oil is full. The cold-check procedure is inconsistent and the hot-check procedure is annoyingly complex. I can tell you that these bikes do seem able to cope just fine with being overfull. I've run it for 1,000s of miles over full to the line that says over full, but I generally run it just a bit over so it doesn't run low. Oil starvation will kill your motor faster than having too much oil will. I'm finding the need to top it off a bit more than I used to. I usually buy 4 quarts and use the remaining 1.x quarts to top off before the next change. I may actually run out of oil before the next interval this time. Of course, I do have a LOT of miles (almost 60,000) on it, I did just take a 3,876.1 mile trip to California last month, and I've been pretty heavy on the throttle lately... It all adds up to consuming more oil. |

Something I noticed on my XB before, and it may be developing a pattern on the CR, but it seems like the shifting gets a little wonky as I am coming up to an oil change. After the change, smooth as butter. Could be the "runs better after I wash it" syndrome, I don't know. I've had a couple of missed shifts recently, not enough to be a pattern, and I'm just over 10K now. Coming up on the 11.5 service. R |

That makes no sense for the XB since it's not sharing the fluid (unless you change the transmission fluid each time -- not likely). On the 1125[C]R, the engine and transmission share fluid, so it's definitely true that as the oil degrades, shifting smoothness will suffer. I have noticed the same on my bike which is why I suggested that he may be due for an oil change, particularly if the bike has Syn3. I've found that Syn3 breaks down much sooner than higher quality oils (because it's a sub-par 3rd tier semi-synthetic blend). |

i found out about the syn-3 right after i did my oil change. i can't wait to get it out! so what kind of oil do you have luck with in these bikes? silkolene? repsol? a dude at aprilla suggested the silk 15-50 for rotax |

Im using the HD oil, i change it more frequently than most, every 2kish miles. (iv had the bike for 4200 miles and had it changed 3 times so far). Im looking at amisol or motul, simply becuase you can get motul EVERYWHERE |

I've mostly used Mobil1 20W-50 synthetic for V-Twins. Seems to work very well. |
