Well I can say the first 7500 miles have been excellent except for a bunch of oil weeps and a few weird noises, but the last 500 miles, not so great. First it was the cracked ECM, then it was a loose belt guard (the lower metal one) that ended up rubbing the belt raw on one side, then my fuel pump started making some grinding noise. Now I have a broken front muffler strap and oh yeah, my battery is about to take a puke and when I push my bike I hear a squeal- I guess it is bearing time. All this along with the take it up the rear and like it attitude from Harley about my warranty expiring early. Man when it rains it pours.... |

gonna call the dealer 1st thing in the AM to see if they have a strap in stock, if not I'll throw some worm gear clamps on there and see what happens. Hopefully they can take a look at everything else while it's there cause I can't leave it, it's my only way to go. |

long drawn out story from start to finish but in a nutshell the XP's (and all other HD police bikes)warranty starts from the time the bike is shipped from the factory. I bought my bike in Oct 2009 and my warranty expires in Nov of 2010, the bike had 6 miles on it when I bought it. |

If they put a new belt on it they will squeal while pushing them around. Mine did it on take off for a while also. I hope there is documentation for their side of the story on the warranty. If not you could win that deal. |

Sorry to hear about your troubles. That warranty story seems really odd to me. I have never heard of that before. Did they tell you that before you bought the bike? My bike has been completely trouble free, but I only have 6300 miles on mine. I am going on a 2000 mile trip at the end of September, hopefully those miles will be trouble free as well. |

Worm clamps won't hold. Napa may have the clamps you need... they won't be as beefy as stock, but if you get the right size they seem to hold reasonably well. In a real pinch, if you get that steel strapping that is about 1" wide with holes every inch or so and that bolts together, that can be installed in a parking lot, and will hold if ridden gently for at least 19 miles (DAMHIK). Too bad about the dealer fussing, but the sooner you control you own destiny the better off you will be in the long run anyway. |

One of the archived threads also mentions the marine version of these.. order online or at your local marine supply?? http://www.deepblueyachtsupply.com/series.aspx?id= 127 Of course you can always get them from Al @ American Sport Bike (Message edited by gamdh on August 28, 2010) |

I got those marine clamps. They are working (on the bike now) and have been fine for 3k miles or so... but when you look at them next to the factory part, they are significantly thinner material. |

I'll have to make something work because it's my only means of transportation so I have to ride it, and the dealer had to order the parts anyway and the closest dealer is 96 miles away. I also commute 65-110 miles a day so any suggestions for a temporary repair will be welcomed. Marine stores and Napa'a are a no go where I live, not much around here but cows, feild's and woods. |

Has anyone ever tried some safety wire or something on there to hold in case the strap breaks? |

Has anyone ever tried some safety wire or something on there to hold in case the strap breaks? Yes, it broke also, along with the auto muffler clamp I had on it too as double backup all within 200 miles of the original front strap breaking. I was on a long trip. |

There are stories here saying that without the strap the weight of the muffler is transferred to the heads and the header studs will break so get something on there soon as that will cause a lot more down time. |

I guess about my only option right now is a worm gear. |

You might try running two automotive straps and see if that will hold it till the correct one shows up. I'm assuming there is enough room to double them up even if one is one top of the other. |

Does anyone know off the top of their head what size I would need? I had to leave the bike at work last night 30+ miles away so I can't really measure it right now. |

I think some one once posted here that a trucking supply house had the muffler straps. Compatible to stock thickness, and cheaper than the dealer. Try a search. |

Looking at some pictures I took last weekend on a ride I noticed my strap was broken... So I did about 150 miles that day plus 4 days to and from work which is about 300 miles, damn near 500 miles on a broken strap- at least.... |

Blasterd, Be sure to check your muffler inlet where the header mates into it. That is where mine started break and then proceed to crack down the top of the muffler. I wish I had taken pics, but I was on an Ironbutt run and I was more worried about time. As my PM to you stated, there was A LOT that was replaced by the dealer once I got home. Good Luck Slowride |

So no one in town had anything like what I needed, must have went to 20+ stores/ industrial supply places. I ended up doing as Blk Uly did and have it welded so please pray for me on the way home. |

Just got off work and I'm installing the welded bracket. Should I drop the whole muffler and reinstall? I had planned on doing this but after inspecting everything it all looks good and tight, no cracks or anything... |

UPDATE! Got my new straps and clamps and all put on today, took a while for the parts to come in so I kept running her with the welded strap and after 900 miles I had no issues with it so if if in a pinch I think the welded strap is better than those worm clamps, just my opinion. On another note, second time I tried to get a comfort kit flash and second time I went away without it.... (Message edited by blasterd on September 10, 2010) |

Appreciate the link to the marine site. Nice option for the clamps, and seems less expensive than when I've bought them through American Sport Bike. What's the issue with the comfort kit flash? I just had mine done last week, ridden about 300 miles with it so far. I like it. |
