Loud pipes save lives, man. (They don't.)
Loud pipes cause restrictive laws to be passed.

I dont see how that could even be legal. Motorcycles are legal road riding machines. We pay taxes & licenses for them the same as cars.
Discrimination is illegal. Would it be A OK to take a 78 camaro with no muffler down the street?
How about a stock Goldwing? Or even a stock Harley for that matter?

My bike has drags on it, but unless I get on it, its not that loud. I can short shift & idle around just fine at 3am.

I seriously hope thats in a private community, and not on a public road. Definitely one sign I would refuse to enforce.

Don't just steal the sign because they'll just put up another one. Join the AMA (or some other motorcycle rights organization). They do fight crap like this.

There is no reason to prohibit motorcycles specifically. If it's noise that they are against then they should say that. Around the Minneapolis parkways they do enforce noise laws. The cops will hassle you for loud pipes but they will hassle you even more for having your 500 watt sound system cranked up in your pimp mobile. It's helped to make the parkways more enjoyable and if you do like Dyna says and just short shift then nobody will hassle you, even if you have loud pipes on your bike.

Well not to burst anyone's bubble, but that is not the first sign I have seen like that. Heck even here in Milwaukee you can find signs like that. For instance at Maverick's on 20th and Howard there is a no motorcycles sign. As far as a 78 Camaro without the muffler. Cops ar WAY more lenient about bikes then cars. I still find it a crime that bikes (many like those at the 20th) have exhaust volumes that I have been ticket for on my car. If you ever look at a Harley Screaming Eagle aftermarket pipe it states right on the pipe "Not legal for street use".

Personally I like a good sounding bike but if I had Dyna as my neighbor I would probably call the cops for a noise violation any time his bike was idling near my house. I know for boats the legal decible level in WI is 86db and if you are tested and fail you are removed from the lake, fined, and not allowed back on the water till your boat complies with the law. I think bikes have always gotten away with more then other vehicles.

Since the 100th the city seems really quiet. I was glad to have all the bikes here and it was fun, but if I had to listen to all those bikes every night I would be pretty upset.

Worse yet, can you imagine all those little rice rocket cars with there little whining motors running around with exhaust at the same level as most bikes???

Its not that loud at idle. Open her up & it barks pretty good tho:D

Signs like that just show how petty people can be.

What the hell is mavericks? I am going to have to take a run up there & see. Maybe even give them a little dose of noise.

I've been sitting in my living room with all the windows and doors closed watching the idiot box, and had loud bikes drown out the sound from the TV. Yes, the cops should enforce the noise laws, but the residents just see another motorcycle. People don't like noise. You might love the sound of your bike, but I bet the people down the street hate it. And for every one of us, there's a shitload more of them. Soon, we'll have exhaust laws like Germany, which will prohibit any alteration of the exhaust. Then Kenny Samson & Co. will laugh all the way to the bank.

I think I'll join Spidy and Rage on this one...I'll provide the alibi!

You gotta wander down and visit more, man!

You were in Newfoundland when that Sign Went Missing.

In fact if you get it I want it so send the evidance this way.

Or use it for your next shooting practice day then replace it on the same pole.

Here in the Atlanta metro area, when we first moved here, we found that a lot of apartment and townhomes would allow motorcycles inside the gates.
This was years ago, and was told it was left over from when bikers were really looked down upon. Things relaxed, and some of the leasing agents said it was no longer enforced (though still written into the lease). Now it seems we've come full circle, "Squids" have taken the place of the "Biker" and I'm starting to see restrictions once again. This is however only in private areas. I love owning my own home now...

In Germany vehicles are checked once every 2 years for many things: suspension, bodywork, pollution, noise, etc. They've got to be able to drive the autobahn reliably.

BUT, this summer I noticed (heard) some Harleys and Buells that had louder than stock exhaust systems. The riders/owners know how far to push the limits so they won't get busted.

Hamburg is Harley friendly. Their police force is currently testing some hogs for use.

After watching this police evidence video from Deal's Gap, I'm beginning to think the stock exhaust of the 12 may not be a bad idea -- stealth, ya know. (may not be suitable for some connections)

Staying on your side of the double-yellow ain't a bad idea either.

The discrimination or passing of new laws is NOT the answer. Simply enforce the noise laws that already exist. Although I love bikes and have a race exhaust on my bike, every morning when the bars close, I get around 6 harleys with open pipes gunning it past my house and I would love to run out and beat them with a baseball bat. I plan on calling the police and asking them to watch our street for several nights. It's not just the noise, but these guys go at least 40 in a 25. Again, no new laws or discrimination, simply enforcement of existing laws.

14 minutes to download here. Any guesses on how long it's going to take me to locate the .dlls to play windows media player video on a GNU/Linux workstation :)
Then again, I seem to have a lot of time on my hands right now, and crappy riding weather, (man I hate rain - especially cold rain - summer disappeared overnight here) so it doesn't matter.

josh thanks, I have mplayer installed, just had to download the codecs. Long, grainy video. I noticed a large number of cars in the video crossing the double yellow in the curve, none of them were tagged for the offense. hmmm. Selective enforcement, anyone?

No kidding. Tho I'm not worried about selective tagging, more like front-bumper tagging.
