So, my friend bought the bike 2 days ago, she bought a Buell because I have one, and she loves mine so much! We took the bike last night to my friend to have him give it the once over. What we discovered is that when the key switch and kill switch are in the on position and the bike is in gear and you pull the clutch lever in, the fuel pump hums and the engine light comes on, just like when you first turn everything on. Has anybody else experienced this? Any suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks |

your clutch cable has worn through a wire behind the light would be my guess and when you pull the handle it grounds it as the cable moves |

I don't think there's anything to fix. It's priming the fuel pump getting ready for you to start it. That is all. The '03s have a clutch switch as well as a side stand switch- gotta have the clutch in or be in neutral to start, which gives the condition you are experiencing. I bet if you put it in neutral and leave the clutch out it also primes? |

Andy, that is correct, in neutral, clutch out primes also. I guess I forgot to mention that while she is riding it will intermittently continue to prime the fuel pump with a continuous loud humming. I am confused, and so are the people whose brains I have picked today |

if she's riding, then it's not priming...its just pumping fuel. It may just be a loud pump. Does it seem to run ok? I bet you're just nervous cuz it's a new machine to you (i would be too!) there are MANY differences from your '09 to her '03 that make yours more refined, smoother and quieter. |

If it ain't making noise while riding, then it ain't pumping, and you are walking Yea the new pumps are much quieter. I had one swapped on my 06 under warranty a while back, when I went to start the bike I had to turn the key a second time because I couldn't believe how quiet it was. |

there is nothing wrong with it to fix. as has been stated there is a safety switch hence the pump only primes when the key/kill switch is on, and the clutch is pulled in when its in gear or in neutral and the key/kill switch is on. and yes when its pumping when the bike is running it kind of has to... how else would it get fuel to the motor? and yes they can make alot of noise. |

The noise starts out loud, and after an undetermined amount of riding, the loudness of the humming goes away. Sometimes it hums normal on start up, and sometimes it hums loud, when it hums loud is when we continue to hear it, and then sometimes, out of the blue it will just stop! I am baffled! |

I have passed all of this info along to my friend, and she has decided to ride the bike since it is running fine. Thank you for all of your help! |

That is the sometimes loud sometimes quiet issue just seems to be the nature of the older bikes because mine is like that but it fires up just fine most days (unless the battery is low on juice) |

FWIW: my '03 is louder at some times than others. I think it has something to do with heat and I'm sure other factors. It has never let me down tho! |
