Throughout the years very little has changed to the Blast. Only an educated Blast owner could tell the difference between a 2000 and 2008 model Blast. While most parts are interchangeable, there is the rare part that is not. This thread is to document real changes not just a minor part number change where both parts look identical. As much information should be provided if possible such as part numbers (new and old), model year and month, VIN,etc.

Welcome Bart!
First off, the dealer should be replacing all the related pulley recall parts for free, which includes belt, pulley (rear sprocket), pulley cover and speedo recalibration 'black box'. If you havent talked to a Buell dealer or Buell customer service, do so before you spend money you dont have too.

Otherwise 99.99% of parts are interchangeable. If for some reason you buy used, there are some (its rare, but...) 2000 Blast 73 tooth 'sprockets' and 135 tooth belts floating around, so be careful. New belt is 139 teeth, 'sprocket' is 80 teeth.

Hey EZ, I was thinking about picking up a Blast and have just started reading some posts for research and noticed somewhere you mentioned to buy an 2003 and up. Any particular reason? There's a 4400 mile 02, stock for $1800 near me and since i'm just starting the Blast hunt I didn't want to grab a problem child/hard to swap parts year, etc.

99.99% of all year Blasts are virtually identical. Its a very rare part that wont fit a 2000 Blast and a 2009 Blast.
2002 Blasts are fine. As with any vehicle, newer is usually better, because time hasnt taken its toll on the parts.
I'd say $1800 is a fair deal.

It appears as if the number of "forged" parts have been significantly increased on the 2010 model, aerodynamics have suffered greatly though.

I still don't get it.

There is 2 different cam covers both function the same.

The older version is Blast specific with only bushings and castings for the 2 cams and crank.


The new version looks to be the same as the XBs with castings for 4 cams + crank but the bushings are not pressed in for the rear cylinder cams.

Thats a lot of part numbers. A brief look shows that most part numbers are very similar, but its not always just substituting the colour codes. If I have a chance I'll post what I got (unless somebody else gets to it first).

I'm about to order parts for upcoming work on my 2000 and want to be sure I have the most recent part #'s.
Cylinder head gasket 16770-84E
-base gasket 16774-86D
Oil seal 11124
Steering head bearings 48300-60
Chain tensioner shoe assy. 39922-00Y
-spring 24349-00Y
-Pin 24350-00Y

Are there any more likely wear components to have on hand when working on the primary? Hadn't dug into it before so tryin to plan ahead. Thanks for the tips and updates.

17055-00YB gasket kit- top overhaul (P3)

17059-02B gasket kit (XB)
Unless you dont need rocker cover gaskets (are you going to replace them?)
Got the primary cover gaskets?

All the other part numbers look good.

In 07 they changed the upper rocker cover gaskets, (but a gasket kit from 07 later will probably include both styles-I dont know for sure). XL & XB & P3 top end gasket kits are interchangeable (to the best of my knowledge-I've used all 3, some kits come with extra gaskets for all)

with all this talk what are the chances of a 2001 year having the "bad" sprocket?
new to me a 2001 blast bought in july of 2011, back in the shop with a catastrophic belt fail, almost like a knife cut it across the thing.
dealer now called back and said i need a new sprocket.
could they be trying to charge me the cost of fixing a recalled item.
and the odo only has 25 K on it. could the odo have been reset or replaced?

Packnrat, no worries if your bike is a true 2001. The recall was for the 2000 only to my knowledge. Everything after that was good to go in that department. Check with the dealer to find out why it needs a new sprocket and go down and check it out. Or do this in the reverse order so you can see it before he or she says anything. I bought mine with 2000 miles according to the odometer, but the title said 3400. Not sure to this day the truth, just know that I've got it dialed in and the little piglet squeals like it should.

Sure its possible, what month/year was it produced? Very, very, doubtful an early sprocket would've lasted anywhere near that long though. Its also possible somebody swapped an early sprocket and belt on for higher top speed. Ask for the old parts back.
Generally, it is advised to replace the rear sprocket when you replace the belt (though many dont). Belt and sprocket replacement is called for at 15,000 miles.
Calling a snapped belt "catastrophic" is a little melodramatic. Belts fail, it happens. Catastrophic is when the rear sprocket comes apart taking the belt, tire, fender, wheel and sometimes the rider with it. Thats the more likely scenario if you had a 2000 sprocket.

(If you look at the above picture of the rear 'sprockets', you'll see they are easy to tell apart and you cant swap them without swapping belts too. So its not just a matter of a bad batch of sprockets, its a failure in the design.)
