Tena Koutou no Aotearoa. Greetings from New Zealand. Can't say enough about the work forums like u and Buellers Downunder do! Anyhow, im no mechanic but i have an issue with my 05 Buell Lightning. I think its a common issue?? Here's the deal...went to start one morning and POP! lost a cylinder. took the plug out and replaced, but compression was way low. Rode about 10miles and engine light came on. Luckily i was riding to the shop! They did a compression test and, suprise suprise, bad compression. I cant afford the shop to work on it, but heard that this does happen around 20,000miles. So my question is, might there be something specific to be looking for?? Otherwise, when its taken apart, what should i look at doing/replacing? Ill get a local mate to give me a hand, he's got an X1, just did his cylinder head. Cheers for any info!! |

I don't think that problem is mileage specific. Could be many things. Little trick before you take it apart, squirt a little oil in the cylinder and re-test. If compression goes up considerably, it could be rings. Don't put too much oil in there. The purpose is to seal the rings with oil for a couple revolutions. If it doesn't improve compression, then look at head gasket, or valves. Anything else will be very obvious when you get in there. Good luck. |

That shouldn't happen at 20k miles. I got nearly 50k miles on mine, and one of the guys I ride with has over 300k miles. |

Definitely check with the oil in cylinder. I changed a set of rocker arms and shafts in a 08 Ulysses with 25k that had a funny noise and low power. It was warranty It comes down to how it was/is driven. what condition the area is in, Road, trail, swamp? How well the services are done and kept up with. What kind of oil is used. |
