Hi everyone!
Well I just replaced my primary side crank seal on my '99 S3. Got the newer design seal with the double lip. Everything went well. Got it installed and reassembled. Before the seal replacement it was blowing oil out the vent tube and got so bad the oil was pumped up the clutch cable all the way up to the clutch lever.
Problem is, now after replacing the seal, there is still some primary oil coming out of the clutch cable. It is not much, just a slight amount. What could be the reason for this? |

Are you positive all your hoses are attached to the correct nipples? It is possible to attach the oil tank air vent hose to the crankcase. I did it on my '99 S3. Had engine oil coming out of my clutch cable line and dripping off the lever onto the ground. |

is the cable sheath cracked? |

The oil is coming up through the inside of the cable. Sheath is in good condition. O ring is good. No vent hoses were removed. Read the original post. |

This might seem elementary, but make sure the oil level is correct, mine did that once when I slightly over filled it.
Just a thought. |

Thanks Obiewan! Yep, I was thinking that may be the cause of the leak. It does seem to be leaking less now. I'll just let it go and see if it takes care of itself. |

Well folks, I resolved the problem. You'd never guess what was causing the oil leak. I had a small 7 ounce container at the end of the vent tube under the rear fender. This was done as a quick solution to stopping the oil from blowing out the tube and messing up the rear wheel and swing arm and fender until I got to replacing the seal. It was acting as a catch can for the oil that was blowing out. Well, I replaced the seal, and left that little bottle on the end of the tube cause I figured it could not hurt, and it was not able to be seen up under the seat. I got the idea that it may have been causing some kind of back pressure that was forcing the oil out the clutch cable. Well, I removed that bottle and the oil leaking has stopped. Interesting huh!? |

It is supposed to be a vent. It should allow the gases to escape (water vapor) but the liquid (oil) should condense and drain back. Hell that,s the way I understand it. Kind of like a pcv valve on an old car engine. Ya re burn it or vent it to the atmosphere. |

Yep, it is a vent. The point is...who could have thought it would allow enough back pressure to cause the oil to come out the cable? Read the previous post. |

Oil coming out the clutch cable
