i found a HUGE oil filter that fits on the buell. its from a 1.6 turbo diesel volkswagen. since i have one of these engines in an '82 jetta that im restoring, and i did an oil change yesterday, i was noticing how similar they are. last time i did an oil change i had a hard time finding a filter but had a bosch filter in my garage, decided to see if it would work. spun right on!
this time, from my knowledge of vw's, i decided to see if i can fit the fat honkin' diesel filter in it (ive used the diesel filter on my vw gas engines too) and it spun right on with room to spare!
took it for a 60mile ride last night and this morning (30mi each way) and no leaks, no oil pressure light, took about 1/2 qt more oil.
im assuming the benefits of this will be a few degrees lower in oil temp, due to extra capacity, and possibly reduction in friction in the filter along with increased filtering surface area.
ill shoot a picture of it later, if anyone wants the part number ill post it up. |

Ricky, I've been running a filter that size for quite some time now- a Purolator Pure One PL-30001. Allows me to run just over 3 qts in my S2, though I always stop at 3. |

the dyna long filter holds more, is black, and looks stock. Plus any harley dealer will have one. |

I run the long Dyna filter in chrome.
Looks great, I can get 3 quarts in, costs about $11, is readily available and there is no question about whether it will bypass at the correct oil pressure.
I have been using these for almost 5 years, I hand tighten and have never had a problem with the filter loosening up.

Sorry, I just go to the parts counter and ask for the long chrome Dyna filter and they usually have it on the counter before I finish my sentence!
An added bonus I just recalled is that it is made in the USA... |

I use the black Dyna filter #63812-90 on mine.
#63813-90 is the Chrome filter. |

Napa PS1215 is the same as the Dyna filter, and it is made in the USA. Plus you aren't supporting the company that shut Buell down |

At one time someone posted up a long list of filters that would work, it's somewhere in the archives I guess. I printed it out and taped it to the inside of my manual. Along with other doo dads that also work on our bikes. |

while we are at it, this is not true. The extra oil will take slightly longer to reach temp, but everything else being equal, it will reach the same temp.
Where some extra cooling may come in is the added surface area of the larger oil filter hanging out in the breeze. |

What about those slip on aluminum finned covers that hose clamp to oil filters? I've seen them on sand rails and Dune Buggys. |

I have one of those cool collars that I bought on E bay. I used an infared scanner to compare my filter temp with my Buddy's filter temp, both on twin cam engines. My filter was almost 30 deg cooler. On a hot summer day, my oil temp is between 210-220 at the tank. I have a filter collar on my S1 as well and take it off when the outside temps get in back down into the 70s. Too cold oil is not good either |

I like using a WIX 51515 on my X1 its about 5 in long and 3.5 in in diameter and I run just under 3 quarts of oil. |

HD makes a cool collar for the short and long filter. It is a chrome plated, ribbed aluminum tube that slides on the filter held on using a friction fit, no hardware is needed. I forget the exact numbers, but think that the added cooling efficiency is something like 5-10%. I run one on both S2s using a dyna filter, usually a black filter (cost savings). HD also has an oil cooling kit that bolts on to the frame and has a little heat exchanger or you can pirate one off of an XB and plumb it yourself. One of the main reasons the twin cam was delayed (99 & 2000) was oil temps, so they have kits in the P&A catalog for this. This was also one of the big reasons that HD brought out the synthetic oil, to better cope with the better thermal properties compared to dino. |
