Well I had a major engine failure in Sunday. Shifter was stuck between 4th and 5th. It finally dropped in but was followed shortly thereafter by hideous knocking. Shut down and coasted to a stop. The pic is of the metal I found in the oil. Perhaps a rod bearing failure. I sure hope my warranty covers it. We'll soon see.

That sucks...As long as you're still in warranty they should fix it.

bummer..I hit my rev limiter for the first time the other day..on 2nd&3rd gear..Got a little worried about it tho. Mainly due to something like this happening.

Wondering if HD has denied any warranty to anyone.

because I did not get the first service with HD or went with HD Syn 3 oil..

Not sure on how picky they are when it comes to covering engines.

Just over 10,000 mi. No warning at all. It was running great right up to the failure. Earlier in the day however, I had a false neutral, which suddenly dropped into a lower gear causing a hi-rev situation for a moment. perhaps initial damage was done then. Rod bearing is a total guess. It just sounds that bad. Could be the trany as I did not notice a sudden loss of power. I also just noticed some oil on the case around the final output shaft, so we'll see.
The bigger question is, WHAT THE HELL AM I GONNA DO WITH MYSELF WITHOUT MY BIKE!!!!!

Id say that was the tranny, i hit a false neutral every now and then, but try to consciously coast with the clutch in, and then re-engage a gear and gently let out the clutch, think someone may come up with a fix to the tranny issue, i'm sure this will become a more frequent problem.

I'm having false neutrals with increasing frequency. I just grab the clutch, coast a bit, re-set the gear, and move on. Seems OK, otherwise. Not sure what this may lead to, though...

The best way to deal with a false neutral is to immediately change to the next higher gear. The longer you coast the louder and harsher the clunk is when you finally get it back into gear...unless you coast to a stop.

Are you kidding? these motors were made to be abused. How many failures have you seen at the AMA racing level over the last two seasons?}

those chunks look too big (from the picture) to be rod bearings. they usually appears as flakes of metal when they come apart

The way I look at it..Why take a chance... It's not like a granny the bike but why hit rev limiter....just saying.

i done over 1000 miles using a air shifter and shifting at 10000 every time i start the bike up .before that clutch and foot shifting about 1000 miles as well must of hit limiter 100s of times no problems .with every thing you buy you can buy a good one or a bad one just one of those things

> It's not like a granny the bike but why hit rev limiter.

Just remember, the rev limiter is there to keep you at rev levels for which the motor may be run indefinitely without unusual cause for concern.

The Erik Buell Racing race ECMs raise the revs another 500.

The 10.5 redline is conservative and reasonable for running the motor at pretty much as often and as long as you want.

Just service the bike frequently if you ride it "extra hard", and use good quality lubricants.

RodRob - Can you say what oil you were using and how often you changed it? Also, how often you checked the level?

The bike market is so depressed right now, if you have the money you could get a smokin' deal on some great bikes. I was just looking for a friend at some '08-'09 CBR1000RRs for around $7K with less than 2,000 miles on them.

You cannot be denied warranty coverage for using an oil different from what the manufacturer recommends as long as it meets or exceeds the specifications (type, class, grade) of the oil recommended by the manufacturer.

It's a United States federal law known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (1975):

The motors can run at the limiter for short periods of time (as in fractions of a second.) But hitting the limiter flexes the rods and that, as you might guess, is not good for them.

I am ENORMOUSLY skeptical of the accuracy of this statement.

Again, the race ECMs raise the limiter, so I can run a long time at 10.55k, for example, and not be on the limiter.

I have my motor running in the 10k+ range for several seconds frequently, many, many times each time I ride it. It has 40,000 miles on it.

I run Amsoil 20 50. I had just changed it and the filter. Triple checked the level. I change the oil often, as I ride the bike hard. I do not think this is oil related. The false neutral happened exiting a turn at about 100 mph and dropped into gear all by itself. No time to coast or upshift. It was a hot day and the bike was at about 220, but still running great. Higbee suggested that it could be the stator nut and that it has happened to him before, so heads up to all for that. I will keep you posted.

Keep us posted. Pretty sure the Amsoil oil covers the requirements for the bike. Seen it advertised at my local HD dealer.

As far as hitting rev limiter....Don't want to end up like my friend who owned a RC51. Hit the rev limiter a few times on ride. And by the end of the day..Oil was puking at of the exhaust..lol

Trust me..Been around modded cars..and I have seen my fair share of engine failures. If you want to ride the rev limiter for a few seconds on your 1125 motor..be my guest.

Rodrob, thanks for the details on the oil, sounds definitely like you did the right things on that front. A question about your temp. The CT was 220F? Were you in stop and go traffic?

I live in Central FL where the current temp is mid-high 90's and with humidity it is usually 107 heat index. When in traffic I will get to CT 195f or so for a few lights, but once I get moving at 45mph+ it cools down to 180-185. Stock 1125R ECM with FMF slip-on. I even have a P1047 error which is too large a difference between F-R fuel adjustment. I'm currently running at 109.5 front/92.0 rear, which is the worst I've ever seen. I've had it to the dealer twice and just dropped it off for the 3rd time. It's running so lean the headers almost glow and it now backfires on decel which never happened in the previous 5,000 miles. I'm curious why your temp was 220 when I've never seen over 205, even in my current error condition.

.I hit my rev limiter for the first time the other day..on 2nd&3rd gear..Got a little worried about it tho

really??? oh man i am REALLY good friends with my rev limiter. one time about a month ago, i downshifted instead of upshifted on the track and my rev's flew WAYYY past the redline... good thing for the HVA clutch! i dont think playing with the rev limiter will damage the engine... but thats just me and my bike's 20k engine'd opinion.

on the subject of this thread, i have a false neutral between 4-5, i believe, as well. i only find it on the road when im shifting my bike slowly and delicately while cruising. when i dont ride my bike like a pansy, i have never once found a neutral false or the real one.. because im always very aggressively and positively clicking off the gears either up or down.

those metal chunks dont look good.. if its engine internal and not covered under warranty, and if it was me, id send it to Erik Buell Racing and have them put it back together with some upgraded parts and go fast goodies, so that i could make an even more spectacular spectacle next time i break it!! .. but thats just me haha

There's a difference between running the engine smoothly at high revs, and bouncing off the rev limiter persistently.

The limiter cuts fuel and/or ignition, and in so doing it does put a stress on the driveline which it doesn't need when running at max revs. Bouncing off it every once in awhile shouldn't be a problem, but doing it consistently, or especially "sitting" on the rev limiter for seconds at a time, is definitely hard on the motor; much harder than running for a significantly longer period just below the limiter.

My local aprilia dealer is where I get my oil, they use, and suggested I do too in the 1125 15/50 fully syn silkolene oil. No probs for me so far, and gearbox is very slick except the occasional false neutral.

My local KTM/Ducati/Guzzi/Aprilia dealer suggested I use Agip 10w60 oil in my 1125r. The head tech used to be on the KTM race paddock, so he knows Rotax engines extremely well . He says KTM used the Agip 10w60 Full synthetic exclusively. So, I followed his advice and I'm happy so far.

If you use an oil that meets or exceeds the type, class, and grade as specified in your owners manual you are fine. It's that simple.

If your manual lists a grade range of 10W-40 to 20W-50 (based on ambient temperature) that would include 15W-40, 10W-50 and 15W-50, but it would not include 10W-60.

If you don't care about, or are past warranty coverage, use whatever you want- it'll be your problem.
