I'd like to check the straps from time to time to make sure they are properly torqued. I see in the service manual that there is a sequence for reinstalling the muffler - is there a "recommended" sequence for checking the torque when the muffler is already installed? I make be over-thinking this but figured I would ask. Can I just loosed the front strap a small bit then re-torque? Should I re-torque to the low or high end of the spec? Thanks! |

Yes, recommended sequence: 1) Do it right the first time, by the book, when you initially install the new strap. 2) Before every ride, swiftly and carefully kick the exhaust can near that front strap. 3a) It thunked and your toe hurt. Good to go! 3b) It clanked and your toe does not hurt. It is defective and should be replaced. Happy to help. |

Reepicheep - don't mean to beat a dead horse, but sounds like you are saying NOT to retighten a strap if it has loosened after being installed correctly? |

Exactly! If it gets loose, you will hear it clanging around when you kick it. I don't think a properly torqued clamp will ever "come loose", I think they just break. the bolt attaching the hanger to the motor can come loose though. The clamp and bracket will stay nicely torqued to the exhaust, but that whole assembly won't be attached to the bike anymore. The "kick" will reveal that also. |
