On the XL forum site under the road racing post there is a video of Lucifers Hammer racing in the 1985 Daytona Battle of the Twins. It's 8 minutes long and surprisingly good for a film this old. If any one is interested............ |

Get back on track and I'll come out of crew member retirement. I've got another friend into buells now up here, I'm sure he'd be a crew member too. |

Dave Despain is correct! That was back in the good 'ol ESPN days. I will be taking the MV Agusta to Jennings in September- it would be great to see some BadWeBers. Let me know what dates you're planning on going. |

That was a GREAT video. That was definitely Dave Despain doing the announcing. Who was the color commentator? I heard Dave call him Dale a couple of times. Was it Dale Quarterly or maybe Dale Singleton? I'm assuming Quarterly, as he made reference to having raced against Luccinelli. I don't remember Singleton as having ridden any GPs, but I could easily be wrong about that. |

I think it was Dale Quarterly. That's 25 YEARS ago !!! |

Too bad we can't get the speed announcers to watch that tape to show them how it is suppose to be done. |

Dave Despain is probably the epitome of race announcers. He's enthusiastic, knowledgeable and articulate. You would never hear inanities like, "Look at the horsepower of that there Harley - Davidson!" when describing an 1125. You would hear him describe rider technique, or possibly explain the controversial points - both pro and con - about why an 1125 is running with 600s, but it would be intelligent and factual. I was at the Springfield Mile when he broke his foot climbing down from the scaffolding to interview a rider. In spite of his pain, he insisted on remaining and calling the Main Event. After the race was over, he then saw the paramedics and was taken off to the hospital in an ambulance. There aren't many like him. |

There was alot of plumbing and venting on that old motor, it started out as a XR-750, was bored and stroked close to 1000cc when that was the limit and finally ended up being 1146cc and was in the Buell frame. I read somewhere in it's final guise it was doing 173mph down the front straight at Daytona.....But it was too late by then, the water cooled Ducatis's and the Britten had arrived at the spring race......... I believe it was Church himself that said the Hammer was at Tilley's shop,in pieces, buried amongst the rest of the parts and pieces. It may be time for a replica. (Message edited by MBC on August 10, 2010) |

The Hammer is in Tilley's shop, among with a lot of other really cool toys (VR1000s, a few XB race bikes, drag bikes, Tuber race bikes etc) They've been slowly and methodically putting the bike back to it's original race trim and it'll be loaned to the HD traveling museum at some point.
