For those of you who have encountered the speedo error where the bike is moving and in gear but the speedo shows “0” and the gear indicator shows “—“. Some of us have had trouble getting the dealer to fix the problem since it is intermittent and the dealer has not been able to reproduce it. Well, after owning my CR for just under a year and 3 trips to the dealer, I have finally gotten the problem fixed and I have learned a lot that should help anyone get this resolved in a single visit to the dealer. In every case of this error I have seen so far, the fault has been with the Speed Sensor. However, it seems very common for dealers to work their way to the speed sensor last. Typical is replacement if the IC first. As far as I can tell, replacing the IC has never fixed the problem and has resulted in at least one more trip to the dealer. However, even telling the dealer this will not necessarily get them to start with the speed sensor. Often the response is “everyone reads stuff on the Internet and thinks they know what is wrong”. If I were a mechanic, I would probably feel the same way but in this case I do know what’s wrong Just follow these steps as best you can and you should have no problem getting the warranty work authorized. Advice: always remain calm and don’t let the situation get you angry. Maintain a positive relationship with your dealer as you will depend on them. Even if they appear inept or unsympathetic, help them to do their job and make things right. You shouldn’t have to but you will. 1. Log the errors: when did it happen? What was the mileage at the time? How long did it last? What were you doing at the time? Keep a good log for a week or so. After doing this a few times, I started to see a pattern – it seemed to happen when the ambient temp was very high. After a 2000 mile trip, I learned that I could make it happen by cracking the throttle and accelerating to freeway speed (very quickly). If I had started with this info, I would have had it fixed the first time. 2. When the error occurs, continue to ride until it stops. If the error condition lasts long enough, the bike will throw a code. This usually happens when you maintain a fairly even speed for a period of time (like on the freeway). The code won’t guarantee, the dealer will fix it but it builds a stronger case. 3. If at all possible, get video of it. I managed to have the error occur and remain on the display long enough for me to stop, get my phone out and record it happening as I rode down a residential street near my house. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BewpAvrqDYY 4. Finally, if the dealer still won’t start replacing parts, simply call H-D Customer Service 1-414-343-8400. Everyone I have run across who has gotten to this point has had the issue resolved by customer service. |

yeah i think mine finally threw the code and i have been waiting and somewhat hopeful it would so as to not have the back and forth due to diagnostics and intermittent nature of the issue |

I had the speedo problem and it was so intermittent I didn't worry about it. Leaving the dealer after I got my wiring harness recall done, the speedo wigged out for several minutes so I did a U turn and took it back to the dealer. They diagnosed a bad speed sensor and replaced it. |

Boogieman, the second time I had mine in the shop it had thrown a speed system code about 4-5 times. that didn't seem to help them at all. Of course that service guy doesn't work there any more and the new guy I am dealing with (the one who got this fixed) seems a lot more committed. While I did try 3 times to get it fixed, it wasn't a major issue which is why it has take a year to get fixed. However, I just did a 1600 mile trip and the odo lost about 300 miles of that. The problem was clearly getting worse. Even more good news is that they had another bike in for the same problem when I showed up. They had replaced everything in the system except the speed sensor including the IC. Once they found the source of my problem, they had the solution to some other guy's as well. Glad I could help you anonymous Bueller |

Does anyone have a pic of where the speed sensor is? I'm having the same prob and was wondering if it was a hall effect(magnetic) sensor that just needed to be cleaned if it has metal shavings on it or something. |

here is the best pic i could find, the vss runs behind the frame and is zip tied to the frame, and then runs into the engine, look near the orange tied down in the pic, its the black wire above the clutch cover with the silver thermal stuff around it.
