I'm still getting used to my 2002 Blast (only 3,000 miles on the odometer) ... and remember I'm coming from a Goldwing background ... The clutch seems awfully "grabby" ... there's even a sound as it engages sometimes ... sort of the same sound that a belt would make engaging a pulley drive ... sort of a "chirp". I found that an add-on kit is available to give the clutch more "friction zone" ... but I'd rather just make sure it is operating properly before I do any modifications ... |

Sounds about right! Might check for leaks, etc around clutch cable. |

We did the "service bulletin" clutch update 200 miles ago and there is now a friction zone in my wife's clutch. No more grabby. |

Concur! That sound is probably the rear tire chirping (common)!!! |

Is the clutch in the gearbox or in the engine oil ??? (I'm used to Honda's where it's all together) Does changing lubricant make any appreciable difference ??? What does it cost ... total, tools and parts' to do the clutch "service update" ??? I can't believe that a bike with little or no friction zone is recommended as a training bike. I've ridden a little Honda 400 and two Goldwings a bit over 100,000 miles (altogether) and find the little Blast more difficult to control than the bigger Goldwings. |

Changing the fluid does not make any appreciable difference in the friction zone (unless you use the wrong fluid) Hopefully Ronbob can give you the price. |

With the clutch properly adjusted, some high quality synthetic oil in the primary and a couple thousand miles in the seat you probably won't notice it any more. The oil for the engine and clutch/primary chain case are seperate. Overfilling the primary can also cause the clutch to behave badly. I personally have had no problems with the friction zone since my first change to Mobil 1 V-Twin. Give it some time the bike will grow on ya. |

Off the top of my head-parts were @ $70.00 and the American Sport Bike clutch tool was @ $60.00[it will work on my XB9XS too] + a quart of Red Line 20/50 MC oil. Result-priceless[ a happy wife]. |
