On 7/16 my 08 R threw the error code p0506. I also started to notice on decel it would backfire quite a bit. Then I checked the AFV the front was around 90 and the rear was about 94. So I took it to the dealer and the said that my idle rpm was higher than expected at idle. They didn't have a fix for it so they cleared the code and said if it happened again bring it back.
On the 17th I rode the 2 hours to Mid-Ohio with no issue. On the way back as soon as I hit the freeway the check engine light came on for a little while then went off. Rode non stop back and checked the codes when I got home. this time it threw the p0506 and p0132. I checked the AFV the back was still at 94 but the front had dropped to 86.
Took it back to the dealer on Sunday, called on Friday to see what was wrong with it, they said the were waiting on HD. Saturday I went to the dealer talk to service(Jim), he told me to go back and talk to the buell tech (Mark). I told him about the backfiring and the AFV. He plugs it in and read the codes the p0506 was the rpm higher than expected at idle again and the p0132 I think was the front o2 sensor.
So he is pretty sure since the carbon canister runs in to the front cylinder it's sucking more fuel from the can at idle raising the rpm enough to trip the code (p0506) and that's why my front AFV was dropping the front was running richer and causing the other code (p0132) to trip.
I know the one guy on here drilled a hole in the bottom of the airbox between the throttle bodies and routed the can there, but I don't want to have a hole drilled and then have HD have a different fix for it and have to have a new airbox put on or it plugged. The dealer is going to call HD today about the real fix for the band-aid. I will let everyone know what they tell me.

I have always wondered about how well the charcoal canister would deal with the fuel boiling issue. I use a catch can on the fuel vent hose after riding and in hot weather it collects a significant amount of liquid. Still, several people on here have used the canister to resolve the issue and seem to have had very positive results. I have been considering the option myself. This is just a thought...I have no hands-on experience with the buell canister myself yet but if others are using it and not having the same issue it would seem safe to figure that there is something different with the setup on yours. Secondly, it is likely that the Buell canister is collecting more than just fuel vapor so there is likely to be some liquid fuel laying in there after a ride. Here is where I am just speculating, but does the return line from the canister run from a location on the canister which is near the edge of the canister? Is that return line positioned on the low side of the canister as it is currently mounted? It sounds like your engine is sucking up liquid fuel on startup so perhaps the solution would be as simple as rotating the canister in its mounting so that the return line is not below the liquid level. Another option might be that the incoming line and return line are reversed. Like I said, just a thought. Take it for what it's worth.

The shop said Harley told them to take it off the bike. That is what they are doing to resolve my problems. It is not finished yet and they need to do a test ride on it when done.

Are they routing it back to the passenger peg?

Rkc, this is probably why Harley told me that they weren't authorizing the charcoal canisters as a fix for the fuel vapors and smell--some of the people with the charcoal canister end up with rideability issues.

I think running the hose up to the center of the airbox ought to prevent any fueling issues as captured fuel is vented back into the motor.
