so far i got the tank off, seat off, rear wheel off, and the swingarm on blocks...

according to the manual i have to take the entire bike apart to get to the dang head. is there an easier way?

it looks like if i just put a jack under the engine, and remove the front isolator and everything attached to the front of the motor i can let the jack down enough to get the head up and over the studs?

bueller?

Its best to leave the rear wheel on.
You are correct though. All you need to do is remove the seat, tank, exhaust and unbolt the 2 isolator bolts, loosen (slightly) the lower tiebar bolts, remove 1 tiebar to head bolt and lower it down on a jack.*
If you need to move the bike around you can cinch the engine up with a tie down strap (ratchet works best).

The cylinder lifts up over the studs. The head just comes off. You really only need to lower the engine to get the covers off.

If you have to remove the "Do Not Remove" bracket, you might want to unbolt that while its on the bike instead of messing with the isolator bolts. And if you do have to remove it, at least it will be out of the way (dont forget to support the engine)!

You can leave the carb hanging as well as the gas tank (carefully).

*If you've added the 3rd 2000yr upper tiebar, you'll need to unbolt that too.

mines a 2002 so im not sure if i have the upper tie bar, but i think there is one in the back of the head... which will have to come off.

will i be able to get the cylinder out too? id like to inspect for wear and take a look at the rings as well.

I am thinking a very sharp knife, then once the front tendons are cut bend it back all the way back and cut throught the ligaments holding the vertabra together and keep cutting until......Oh, you mean cylinder head....
