Ok, so it has finally happened to me. My 1125 developed the front for clunk. I thought it was initially the head bearings so I replaced them, and well it didnt solve the issue. So my dealer called HD and they said the same thing everyone else hears... Its normal bushing noise and wont harm the bike. Well Im not very accepting of that. So what has everyone done? I know some have went to heavier fork oil....Does it work? Has there been any redesign on the bushing that I can retrofit it? Does reworking the forks with an Erik Buell Racing setup fix the issue? I know this won't help but mine has done it since new. Dealer said it was normal and blamed it on the floating front disc. I know it's not that because I can hear it when compressing the forks without applying the front brake. I don't think it's the steering head bearings either. Seems to be coming from the forks. I still have a year and a half on the warranty so I'll wait to see if it gets worse. I have about 1200 miles on the bike now and it hasn't changed since new. | ||

I also had the clunk in the front end. Called Mike at Erik Buell Racing and he thought it was the floating front disk. They have different mounting bolts where the spring pushes the disk in the opposite direction and eliminates the clunk. At the same time I took the bike to my dealer, who earlier had hinted it was my imagination. The factory was of no help and the dealer discovered a leak in one of the legs, so rebuilt the forks under warranty. No more clunk and I have yet to install the mounting bolts. My dealer is J&L Harley in Sioux Falls, SD. Have to be one of the best around. For what it is worth, I have been told by a reliable source that there is a metal part in the fork that will also cause the clunk by hitting the inside of the leg, and that it is normal operation. Mine got so bad I was afraid to ride the bike and was prepared to have the forks rebuilt on my nickel, either by Harley or Race Tech. | ||

Thats interesting... I will check out the rotor... That is the one thing I never looked at. I will post up when I come to a conclusion! | ||

If you are bouncing the front with the front brake held, then most, if not all of what you hear is the front brake. I will have to investigate these new mounting bolts. | ||

The p/n for the rotor bolt kit is CQ001.02A8. They are at http://www.EBRacing.com/shop/product27.html and cost $41. I would have sworn they were about double that but maybe the price has changed. | ||

Before you spend money, check your fork stem torque. | ||

i pushed mine through the yard last night(lots of little bumps) and heard all kinds of knocking noises. it sounded like it was up in the trees. i'm gonna check the head bearing torque when i put the high handlebar kit on  | ||

Ive already re-torqued and reset everything and changed out the head bearings. The brake rotor looks like it may very well be the culprit because I cannot replicate the noise when I compress the suspension without the front brake on. So im pretty sure I will be giving Erik Buell Racing some business here real soon! | ||

Also to look at is that the brake pads can move slightly in the caliper and make noise. Make sure that it's not something that simple. | ||

funny thing with mine i get a clunk/knock noise but the head seems to be within spec i have been watching very closely and the bottom of the fairing is flopping around on certain bumps like when i leave my driveway | ||

Well, its not the rotor. I had my dad hold onto the rotor when I compressed the suspension and the rotor doesnt move. Its also not the pads either. So what are the ideas now? | ||

If you want to eliminate the possibility of it being the front brake, put the front tire against an immovable object, and compress the front suspension WITHOUT touching the brake. If you hear a clunk or noise, it is certainly NOT the brake rotor.  | ||

Just step on the rear brake while compressing the front suspension. | ||

The noise is NOT coming from the brake rotor or caliper. Its coming from the forks. | ||

Mine has been doing it for a very long time. Not sure when it started, I first noticed it about a year and a half ago. Out of warranty now, Loretta is 2.5 years old with 25k miles. It hasn't gotten any worse with time, I'm sure it is the floating bushing at the top. not concerned. Zack | ||

Mine is in the shop right now for that clunk. They told me neck bearings and will cost around 200 bucks. | ||

You do it yourself it will cost you about 30.... Just saying..... and its a different clunk if you are getting your head bearings replaced. | ||

mine does it too, Its coming from inside the right hand fork near the top and seems to be a bush or seal that drags on the inside of the fork, I don't think its an issue and it hasn't got any worse but will continue to monitor, definitely not disc, calliper or steering head. |
