I was just curious if Erik Buell Racing has any plan what so ever for a streetable 1190? Of course there may be a clause with HD that prevents this, not none the lees I am curious. For that matter any plans for Erik Buell Racing to produce even in small numbers any kind of street bike? Thanks |

February 2011 was floated in many internet forums, but no one ever denied it. In Steve Anderson's Cycle World article (from the May, 2010 issue) the last paragraph reads quote:"And in about a year his non-compete agreement expires, allowing him to build street motorcycles again if he so desires."
Considering typical magazine lead times, I'm guessing that article was written in or around February or March of this year. |

There is nothing, from a legal perspective, to keep Erik from building anything he wants to. does this mean there is no non-compete in effect? That would actually be disheartening as I was hoping things would be lined up as soon as it expired. But then again maybe the plan is to get more exposure from racing, then talk about a production bike. Or maybe he just wants to play on the track where it's more fun and less b.s. then trying to work with another company. AHH! it's the not knowing that's killing me. Either way I imagine him much happier than he was with h.d. but rumors, ohh the rumors. 1190 iwantiwantiwantiwant. |

The reason I asked was because Erik stated at Homecoming that he was no longer tied to HD in anyway and they had "let him off the hook" early as was posted numerous times and heard by many folks at Blackhawk including myself. Can't wait |

I wasn't at Homecoming. GREAT news! Just remember: Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the Buell Motorcycle Company. Erik has to start almost from square one again. There aren't nearly as many requirements to build a race bike as there are to build a street bike that passes all of the laws and regulations for legal road use in the United States, Europe and other countries... |

The cycle world article, which I think is the most accurate, also states that part of his severence package includes the rights to racing projects, parts, and designs. AKA the barracuda. Geoff May stated in his radio interview that a street version was in the works to make the 1190RR homologated for AMA.It seems to me Eric is back to square one, like when he made the RW750, only this time he has the advantage of looking back and seeing what not to do.Re: signing with HD.Step 1 get 1190 AMA and possibly WSBK legal. 2 make street version. 3 make different versions off the platform, CR, Uly,. From there it's up to the customers to buy his hand built bike's. I went thru the factory in 96 and was like a well run big garage. He may not build in the masses, but when I bought my S2 in 96 I was a lone wolf out there.Many people advised me against it but I owned it longer than any other bike. 12yrs. With all his expierience he should be able to get back to the level of the early years quicker. Only this time leading the way with a track proven winning bike (1190RR). 2011 race season can't come fast enough. |

Manufacturing has changed so much since 96 as well. Never before in history has it been possible for such a small and smart team to scale really far and really fast. It's almost to the point where controlling your own large scale parts manufacturing resources may be a competitive disadvantage... there is nothing you can do better / faster / cheaper than a company that specializes, and every part has a company that specializes in it. You want to invest where you add value (which in the case of Erik Buell Racing is design) and buy where things are a commodity (i.e. manufacturing of parts). Buell has done this well since day one. Well, maybe Day 2... they learned some good lessons from scaling up the S2. But they are as versed in it now as anyone in the industry, the XB is a model for how it could be done. By the way, I know both BMW and Aprilia reached some kind of arrangement with the FIM to allow them to race WSBK last year as NEITHER bike (RSV4 or S1000RR) was available for sale till the very END of the year. |

During his time on Pitpass Radio, Erik mentioned a street version of the 1190. Specifically, he mentioned a small number of relatively expensive bikes. Currently, he does not have the means to get back into mass production. He gave no time line but did express an interest in producing a street bike. He went further to discuss intellectual property rights held by Harley and having to do some new and different things... The podcast is available through the itunes store (free) and from the pitpass radio site. |

"How many street bikes would he have to sell to be ama legal?" The 2009 and 2010 AMA Pro Roadracing rules do not quote a specific number of bikes, but it has to be homologated by AMA. I guess that means Erik Buell Racing will have to negotiate with AMA on what is a reasonable and acceptable number of street bikes... 25? 50? 100? ".....2011 race season can't come fast enough....." +1! |

if i remember right foggy petronas had to produce 150 to get into wskb but that was by the second year and so many had to fire up picked at random, 75 where shown in one country then another 75 shown in another country,it was rumored to be the same 75 until the lot where recently found stored away, |

WSBK rules were changed about two years ago to prevent small-volume exotics from competing in what is SUPPOSED to be a production-based class. Hence the "3,000 units." They don't want that nonsense like when the AMA homologated the Harley VR1000 because 50 of them were sold as street bikes in POLAND (not even in the country hosting the races for crying out loud). I also remember the Honda RC30 and Yamaha FZR750 homologation specials. For $45,000 you could own a genuine race bike with lights. I don't know about the RC30 but I believe you had to have a racing license to buy the FZR750. |

In car racing they have brake lights, so the turn signals are probably to tell the riders behind them which way to go when they get to a confusing section of the track. |
