Some have had occasion to check and adjust valve clearance before the 12k check. Anyone care to comment? And how hard do you run your Buell?

I don't beat mine, but drive hard as the occasion arises.

I dug into my CR at "about" 4000 miles and ALL 8 were tighter than the book allows.

I for one...as mentioned a few times on this board...am glad I did mine early.

Did you loosen and then adjust to speck? If the valves are to tight what will that cause?

Tight valves will stay open too long, end result, burnt valves if left that way too long.

A loose valve is a happy valve, Racing is a different story

1125rcya -

You can't "loosen then readjust to spec."

You check the current rocker to shim gap. You verify per the manual what it's supposed to be.
You then just do a little 4th grade math, and figure out what shim you need from the original check...then buy that shim and install, verify, reassemble.

Many things can cause the tight clearances. I won't speculate on the cause.

In my case, Dean is right. The gap was so tight, there was witness marks on almost the full circumference of one cam lobe...NOT good...!
While I have leakdown check equipment for the cars, I didn't check to verify all was well on that cylinder. Seats are only good for a rough given amount of miles anyway before they start to seap/leak. With the way the lobe looked, I wasn't too concerned.

As far as a "loose valve is a happy valve" funny...but not quite correct.
That, VERY much depends on the cam lobe grind.

Mike, what prompted you to check your valves so soon?

Way back, I bough my second new bike, an 87, FZR 1000.

Mostly curious about the new Yamaha engine, after about 5000 miles (12,000 recommended) I decided to dig in and look...
I figured while I'm here...run the valves.
Well, about half of them needed new shims.

So I've checked all of my bikes since then...early.
I have about two weeks off during Christmas Holiday...it was then I decided to go at it.
Add to that, someone had his R apart some time ago here on the Badweb, and mentioned his tight valves, so I figured it was about time I checked mine.

Just like steering head bearings..
My CR is the "first" bike I've owned, new or used that DIDN'T need the head bearings adjusted..!
