When my buell was up and running, my buddy on his R1 and I would go for spirited rides outside the city. One time while we were stopped in a rest area, he lit a cigarette while checking out my bike. I screamed at him to get away while he had a WTF look on his face. After I insisted that he put out his cigarette, I explained to him that he was knelt down near the fuel hose and that it might not be a good idea to have a flammable source in that area. He still had a WTF look on his face until I told him to look closer at the tube sans cigarette. It was a hot day and we could see thick gasoline vapors streaming out of the hose. A few minutes later, the dripping began. So.. am I being paranoid when I told him to GTF away with the cigarette? Hell, I even park the bike outside after a ride since my gas water heater is located in the garage and I would not dare open up the gas cap while the fuel is boiling unless it’s outdoors. Am I being a worry wart and just being silly with this? | ||

I had the Cali Can dealer-installed on my 49 state '09R. I wasn't going to live with that fuel venting / dripping at the rear passenger peg. I don't smoke ... But still! | ||

I'm glad for another reason to not live where it's so hot. I have my fuel vent returned to its original forward position with a short vent line. A small amount of fumes escape, but virtually no drips. Rarely can I even smell gas, much less enough to worry about. Loretta's down but I rode the Uly today, right at 100F outside. BTW, I smoke and ride sometimes. Char(Whatever) hollered at me to get rid of my cigarette at Homecoming, on a ride.  She was behind me. whatever..  Zack | ||

cigarettes can't catch gasoline on fire. Try throwing a lit cigarette into a bucket of gasoline. Theres actually too much carbon monoxide around the hot end of the cigarette to let it support combustion with gas. You don't burn the gas itself, but the gas fumes. If the CO makes a barrier around the hots, then no oxygen and no fuel can get to it, no fire. Try it...we did in fire academy. Fill a bucket full of gas, and just toss a cigarette in it. | ||

What about vapors? I'm actually more concern about the since you can clearly see vapors streaming out of the vent tube. | ||

I called HD customer service and explained my concern over this issue - I had a buddy lean down to look at my belt drive with a cig in his hand, it was a very hot day, bike was hot and you could see the gas fumes pouring out of the vent tube. I also mentioned as a responsible "old" racer I would not do a track day and drop fuel - HD stepped up and paid for the installation of a Cali-can. The bike runs fine...and I really like not having a puddle of gas in my garage every time I come home form a ride - they also replaced a rear signal light under warrenty...as long as I'm at it, I did the harness upgrade at about 500 miles - All good so far...nearing 2K. +1 on Ridegreen. Cigarettes only cause big gas fires and explosions in the movies. Now, lighting the cigarette near gas fumes is a different scenario..... | ||

True. On many of the older Mythbusters episodes you will see they ran into difficulty trying to blow up things with gasoline. Not that it is impossible, but the conditions have to be right including the correct air and fuel mixture. Still, I wouldn't be smoking near a source of gas fumes, wither its a tank vent line on a motorcycle, or a gas pump. | ||

You can smoke around the bike, even with the fumes around the fuel air mix is not great enough to start it, now would I put my face with a lit cig near the vent hose probably not (Murphy's Law/Darwinism) but sittin on it smoking isn't going to blow it up as I have more than a few times. | ||

vapors,liquid, whatever, if its gasoline then a cigarette will not ignite. Can not ignite in ANY real world conditions.air/fuel/temp all have to be just right for ignition, and at normal atmospheric pressure it's just not possible. One of the instructors at my fire training academy tossed a lit cigarette in the gas tank of his truck as a demonstration, freaky to say the least! |
