2008 1125R. Just started the other day. Cuts in and out for no apparent reason. Anyone with that issue? Solutions? New gauge cluster in my future? Sending unit?

VSS or vehicle speed sensor.

I've got the same issue. It seems to come back when I hit a bump enough that the front end dives a bit. The RPM still reads, but no speedo or odo so I'm assuming it's in the pod. I'm glad you posted, I just haven't taken the time to do the same yet. I'm not looking forward to taking it to a dealer for an intermittent problem.

The vss is on the clutch side of the motor. It could be several things, a bad sensor, loose wire, or something else.

I've got a new instrument cluster on the way under warrenty for the same problem. Hopefully it fixes it.

A new IC probably won't fix it. It's a speed sensor error most likely. It's been a relatively common issue.

I'd place a smallwager on the VSS, as has been said it's a "known" issue

Mine just started doing the same last week.
Search this forum and found a bunch of others with the same issue. Most all said it was the VSS.

Almost certainly the speed sensor.

Be prepared for the dealer to tell you that they can't replace it if they can't reproduce it and that after "several" test rides, they haven't seen it happen. My bike has been in 3 times with no solution. I have video now and will take it in soon but haven't had the time lately.

yeah it's pretty frustrating for both sides when it's not bench reproducible. electronics makes liars of the most honest people on earth

Mine just started doing this too. One time and one time only I got a "check engine" light to come on and we inspected the code which indicated the VSS. However, the speedo was not working 80% of todays ride for me and my mechanic at Harley Davidson of Ukiah, whose a pretty sharp guy, told me to check the connection behind the display. I pulled the bikini cover off the CR and played with the connections some. Not sure I did anything but after putting it all together is appears to be working fine so far. He had another customer with a similar issue and bad connection back there. You might want to do a little poking and see what you find.

The same thing happened to me. The speedo connector was loose. Just pull the boot back, and use a screw driver to pop out the connector, then push it back in firmly.

I have this issue with mine also. HD said they are going to replace the whole dash cluster. Mine cuts out after about nine to eleven miles of riding. If I let the bike cool down, it will work again for nine or so miles. Do any of you notice that not only the speedo goes to zero, but the clock freezes and so does the odometer. They are also replacing the clutch cover because of a leak, just under the little black puck. I dont think its just the cover, but they say it is.Fortunately it is warranty work, but the parts are back ordered.

You're right, it's not JUST the cover. There are internals that need replaced too. I don't have the part numbers, but they've been posted on here. I would make absolutely sure that they are ordering all the parts for this or you will have the problem again...and be waiting again. Also, you need the VSS replaced whether or not you have the cluster replaced too. When I went in for mine they wanted to order a cluster (probably should have let them) but I made sure they just ordered the VSS. My problem has been solved ever since.
