well i changed my oil to mobile 1 10-40w 4t bike oil. also swapped out most of the coolant for distilled water and water wetter as prescribed on the bottle. well it's still really farkin hot. i have the latest as of may tune from harley headers are wrapped otherwise stock. while riding at a sustained 50+ CT was reading 198 and the thighometer was reading OUCH! ambient temps were reading as 95+ by the locals i am guessing 115+ pavement temps a lot of this riding was done on concrete section of I-95 as it goes through Jacksonville. thinking that when cash allows frame insulation from American Sport Bike and the skins on the outside too. any other thoughts? |

Seems to be turning out to be the nature of the beast. Jap bikes run hot too .. Us Buell guys suffer more due to the metal tank/frame ... |

The Erik Buell Racing ECM runs richer and therefor a bit cooler - but I don't think it'd be enough to make an appreciable difference to the "comfort" factor. Heat wrap on the headers, add thermotec or similar heat tape inside the frame rails, under the airbox base, on the air intake tube and try the American Sport Bike skins too... That's probably about all you can do. You're right though - BOY does the frame get hot LOL, it'll be nice in the winther though |

As I posted on the burned me thread: "Is there a greenhouse effect with the inner air box base being too close to the perimeter of the frame? Would it be better without this close fit to allow heat to escape up the side? Is the denoided-NOID in the way of air flow too?" I can't help but think that the more air flow around the frame the better. As I am typing this I am staring at the right side image of a CR, The pod covers up most of the leading edge of the frame. Is this another source of heat on the frame? Would it help if pod air passed through and onto a frame covered with water cooled heat sinks, or fins or something like that? I remember reading that the reasoning for the reverse fan direction was to keep heat off the rider. The frame is the big heat issue right now, would an air flow change and some additional engineering to the pod design hurt or help in fixing this heat problem? |

Boogi - Do a search, many have complained and talked about it here and other boards. It's NOT the "nature" of the beast. More fuel will help a little, but some additional ignition timing will go a long way toward cooling things off. Along with the header wrap and insulating the interior of the frame. Mine only just touches 200 degr. on 100 degree days in heavy 5pm traffic. Your best bet might be to call Erik Buell Racing and get one of their ECM's. That will make it run better and cooler. Mike |

If it is a 2009, change injectors with a 2008, then go to a dealer and let them reflash your bike to a 2008 there go's your heat problem, then get a good tune for your setup, and enjoy riding, the rest of the solutions are worthles on A 2009 or later model they made a mistake with the injector choise |

Easy, Are you saying the 2008 injectors will help the bike run cooler? ac |

Swapping ECM's and Injectors and not an option for the CR ... there was no CR in 2008 ... so the gearing would be incorrect. |

it's an 08 R the headers are wrapped already. when i had the cali kit put on i aksed about the insulation but got no where. so i guess im gonna drop the $$ with American Sport Bike to get their kit. it's to the point that i guess i am gonna also have to drop the coin on the Erik Buell Racing ECM even though i think it is horribly wrong for me to have to 'fix' this issue. seriously thinking that the headers will be getting jet hot coated asap as well. guess it's a good thing i didn't pay full price. as much as i love this bike and how she rides looks and handles i'd be super pissed if i'd paid full coin |

I did the Erik Buell Racing ECU, header wrap, frame insulation and the snake skins. 100% better than before, mainly the ECU I believe. I plan to line the bottom of the seat pan with Dyna-mat next. DR |

Danny- I wonder if the racers with the flat mounted rads are having the same issue? I know their leathers offer a lot of protection as does their movement as they ride. I notice that the issue gets worse as the fuel level drops which makes sense. I also wonder if the crab claw pods help or hurt this issue. Pretty sure once I have the coin the jet hot will be first then maybe another wrap over that. Followed or in conjunction with the American Sport Bike frame blankets. Final step will be the ecm. I've been around high performance machines a lot and this is the first one that is threatening to burn me in the correct operating position. So far it seems like the oil/coolent change has at least kept me out of the 220 range I've only seen 212 since I did those. Those fans seem like they may be able to pull more air with a different blade... |

I have the Erik Buell Racing ECM in my 09R and while it runs 100% better I don't think it helped the cooling issues. I still see 210 deg in traffic on a hot day. |

When Irode home sun at a sustained 85 mph and 94degrees my coolant tmp ran 173-175 On the interstate air temp went to 122 and my coolant to 198 it was a short hop 3 miles and back off to local roads stop and go 7 miles air was cooler 96 coolant temp 189-91 My frame is warm to the touch bare handed cant tell air or tank through jeans . I run 93 octane or better I suspect afv value soft ware or sensor issue with the hot bikes |

Hm. 09 CR here. All stock including ECM, no wrap, no insulation at all. Most recent flash (what...152?). HD coolant. Syn3 oil. 105 ambient the other day with uber-humidity, sustained 4k to 5k riding both mountains and slab. Speeds between 45 and...well...numbers my wife doesn't need to see. CT never over 179, all damned day. |

could be a calibration issue of somekind but WNL at the same time. my coolant temps get pretty high and my ass ankles legs thighs etc with jeans with ventilated textile suit with hikers with big insulated high top boots doesnt matter what i wear i get hot the less i wear the hotter i get however when a bare hand is layed on the frame it's hot enough that i don't want to keep my hand on it for any length of time at all and my hands are calloused from hard work so i don't think it's thin skin issues. |

I have been thinking about this problem. What i have noticed, is that the bike really heats up when the bike is not moving, AKA when the fans are the only mechanism moving air through the radiators, that makes me wonder if the fans were upgraded to fans with a higher cfm, if it would help keep the bike cool. Does anyone know the cfm of the stock fans? I wonder if we could tap into the aux plug to to get some more juice for some bigger fans. |

have been thinking about a different blade for the ones we have but if you put more strain on them they will pull more amps so then we have that issue... |

Personally, I think redoing the entire pod/fan system to blow outwards instead of into the center would be better. That way the heat isn't pooling onto the frame and motor. |

Somebody with a 2009-2010 model 1125 should change the injectors for 2008 model, I support the flash, I would like to know where the heat went (-: I think the choise for the 2009 injectors was a bad one |

I agree with Froggy. Bringing the air into the motor/frame area just brings heat back to where it started being a problem. It also tends to cook the rider and passenger seats. The rear header is also right there further adding to the heat. Easy, You are pretty confident that the 08 injectors are better for the 09? Does the flash have to change? I am strongly considering this. I know Erik Buell Racing sells the 09 injectors as an "upgrade" for the 08. They also claim the flash is the same 08 vs 09. ac |

Shoob815 forced his seat to curl up a little bit in the back (by inserting more foam or something), "accidentally" creating a 1/4" vent. He claims that his CR runs cooler as a result of the improved air flow. |

Avc, Yes the ECM needs to be reflashed with a 2008 flash the calibration of the injectors is different so it ain't working. With the 2009 flash, and yes it works I see it weekly on my dyno I even changed my 2008 with my 2009 injectors and the heat went up imediatl selling 2009 injectors for a 2008 is a DOWN grade, not an upgrade the flash is not the same it looks like, if they tell you that the flash is the same I think your info is wrong it is impossible that will work |

AVC - I know you didn't quote CT numbers...but the OP did, third line of the original post. That was what I was referring to. And, I recently bought some Joe Rocket mesh riding pants with armor. I was concerned because there was no heat shielding on the right inner calf - not only because of people's reports of heat there, but because of my medical condition that results in no surface sensation from that ankle to the knee, front to back. If I was burning there...I'd never feel it. Wearing the mesh over shorts and 9" boots...not only did I feel no heat, but I got no burns. I don't know if I'm too gentle to my bikes (not likely) or what, but the hottest bike I have is my S1W and even IT has never burned me. I can get my S2 hot enough to ping the instant I open the throttle and it doesn't get uncomfortable to me. And, I did four hours on the Uly last weekend, at 45mph or so the whole way (SOMEbody refuses to keep up on her Blast...), riding 2-up in 100 degree weather and in the same mesh pants over shorts...no burns. |

froggy has a good idea the wing works like that sorta. up to 15mph the fans runs and pull air in from the outside after that the ram air is enough to cool the bike without fans running. would be interesting to see something along those lines |
