I'm looking for an XB with there Deer catcher option. I just hit one today and the XB lost. Steering head was completely torn off, busted out 2 spokes, bent 2 others, and cracked still 2 more. Smashed the faring, just got a few scratches on the frame.. Now me... 4 minor rash spots, deep depression about loss of bike, and some torn Joe Rocket gear. Gravedigger had the best view from about 25-30 yds back. I slid for over 350' bike 600'+ wont have the exact measurements till tomorrow. I have to say that there are some great people out there. So many people stopped to offer help. Many couldn't believe that I was walking around. I have told anyone who will listen "Always wear your protective gear!" I was wearing a Meteor 4 jacket, Ballistic 4.0 pants and Phoenix gloves and a MR8 helmet. Every part did it's job. I am very happy to be alive. I must go and cuddle with my kids and then my wife. Daves if your reading this... Yes I want to get back on! | ||

Sorry about your accident, Ben! Glad you're okay.... hope you get back to riding soon. Speaking of the deer catcher option... Bambi scares the crap outta me... I rarely ride in the evening where I live. You can't go anywhere without seeing deer on the road, dead and alive. What really opened my eyes was the time we were tooling down the freeway at night... in our cage. We rounded a bend and there it was... freshly dead in the middle of the road. Didn't want to chance swerving at that moment so I straddled the sucker. There were car parts strewn along the highway in front of us... we were about the fifth car to hit it. I was pulling deer meat out from under the car for days!!! What a stench!! | ||

Yikes....pretty much the classic example of "why to wear it". Glad you came away with nothing but mild depression as you wait for the insurance folks to fund your new XB12! Court | ||

Congrats on your survival! This ssems somewhat goolish, but do you have any photos of your gear, the bike, and the deer? I think by seeing this it would help drive home the need to wear the rught stuff.... kk//kef | ||

"Steering head was completely torn off," Just like it was designed to. Was there any fuel leakage? BTW, 350 feet of personal travel, 600 feet of bike travel equals a very healthy speed, somewhere in the 75 to 85 range not counting any slowing from hitting the deer. I wouldn't be mentioning these distances to my insurance company . . . And very glad to hear you're OK. I would suspect it's because you either went over or through the deer without a huge speed change, perhaps something in the 15 to 20 mph range as a WAG -- which would have put your initial speed that much higher. SMadd, This happened at 3 in the afternoon. I was kind of suprised to see a deer at this time of day. We ride this rode all the time. It happened right as we were crested a small hill. He had absolutely no time to react. After seeing it all unfold right in front of my face I feel the same way many of you guys do! Thank God he is still in one piece! Freyke, I have all the images I need from this situation. Both mental and Digital. I took a digital camera along so that we could post a few pics of Ben's new bike being put through the paces for everyone here on Badweb. Never thought that The images would be of this type. I have pics of it all the Bike, the deer, and the gear. I'll post them all up here this afternoon. Daves, The bike is totaled I will guarantee it!! I'll get you any pics you need. Its in my garage as we speak. It slid a very long way then caught something right before it came to a stop and went end over end. The front end is trashed but the rear end looks pretty good beside small scratches everywhere. MikeJ, Steering head is completely torn off. The only thing still holding it together is what remains of the the wiring harness. Glitch, I was extremely impressed with the way the Joe Rockets held together. Ben and I discussed that very same topic yesterday and again this morning when he stopped by to take another look at the remains of his bike. We both basically own the exact same gear except in different colors of course. It really reassured my faith in the stuff!! Usapitbullz, LOL, Upon our return to my house, Ben was allready talking about maybe getting a XB12!! I must say I am jealous because I really really want one!! I definately don;t want to go through what he did yesterday just to get one!! He was very very fortunate yesterday!! Thats probably the understatement of the century!! steve a, no fuel leakage. just a few scratches on the frame. He was only doing the posted 55, I swear!!!  Thats what the police reports says! He did drive right through the deer. He clipped the rear quarter of the deer and it did a flat spin right into the ditch. Keith | ||

Man... in the afternoon too?!! I'm always "looking" for animals to cross my path. But I'm especially vigilant in the evenings around here... lowering speeds considerably, if I'm riding at all. Alright... I need to upgrade my gear. My helmet is too old, I have no back armour, my pants are simply "Draggin' Jeans"... I have to do better in that regard!! Ben... best of luck in replacing your poor XB. And I hope you don't need to ever use that Deer Catcher option I know you'll be installing! | ||

You guys are a riot. Odd, I would have thought the jacket would have held up better than that. I've got a FirstGear ballistic nylon jacket with leather in certain places, elbows, shoulders, etc. I don't feel as safe in it as I used to after seeing those pics. | ||

Send me one of those! Thank you all for the concern and good wishes. The day after, I am very sore, have to lift my right leg into and out of the car, those little rasberries are starting to tingle and itch, but all in all I feel that I am very lucky to be telling this story. On my way home today I saw a couple on a bike with just tank tops and sun glasses and I felt that sick to my stomach feeling. Please if there is anyone out there without all the gear. GET IT, WEAR IT! I would really love to start some kind of fund or hand me down gear type of thing. I'm not sure how yet but I know that I have to get as many people in gear as I can. Some where on here someone made the comment that an emergency room Dr. told them that they have never seen anyone come in wearing protective gear. I am now a true believer and am willing to do what ever it takes to get the word out. I am not a religious person, but I do believe this is what I am supposed to do. I also know that every situation is different, but if there is a small price to pay for being able to sit here and laugh about this I will pay it 100 times over. Sadly, while riding in the Suches area we were stopped at Turner's Corner for lunch we saw a guy on an F4i with shorts and t-shirt, and get this, dock siders. We heard later he lowsided, any of us would have been pissed we slid our bike, and look for damage to the bike, he was not worried about his bike as he lost most of his skin on the left side.. | ||

Hootowl, I don't think I'm trying to make people feel unsafe, just the opposite, I feel that my gear held up above and beyond the call of duty. Yes, maybe if I was in full leathers I might not have a single scratch, but for the comfort, price and availability of my Joe Rocket gear it did great. I don't really want to go into the 'What if' area of this, just that everyone should wear protective gear. No I don't think it should be made laws or such, but I will suggest to anyone I see without it that it will save your life. Mikej, yep, already looking for some new gear, and that is a great site. I really wouldn't want to see what kind of mess I would have left if not in my gear. I'm not disagreeing with you just not really wanting to pick up those messes or hear the horror stories of some idiot who wanted to look cool on his new bike and ended up painting a new line down the road. Ben, I understand. It's just that I was under the impression that the textile jackets were as good as the street weight leathers are. It was that revelation that caused my jitters. I have a thick leather jacket, but it's too damn hot here in the summer to wear it. I think I would die of heat exhaustion were I to attempt it. Think blast furnace. | ||

Hootowl, Trust me when I say this. At the speed he was carrying at the time of impact the Joe Rockets held up extremely well!!!!!! I wear the exact same gear that Ben does and I was extremely impressed with the way they held up. I am going to stay with the stuff I have. Keith | ||
