I will start by saying sorry if I bring up something old, but I tried to use the search function, but could not find what I am looking for. I have a new to me 2002 X1. Does this ECM have an engine management system like the harleys that cuts out the rear cylinder when it overheats? A couple of times now in heavy traffic the rpms will go up a little and it runs weird. |

Yes it can go into skip mode if overheated. |

I would make sure the head temp sensor is working properly. It usually takes a lot of heat to get the bike into that mode. |

Where is that located and how would I check that? In 1100 miles of driving it happened 3 times. The first I was stuck in traffic for about 30 minutes. That was about a month ago. The other two times was yesterday. I was stuck in traffic in Gettysburg and then again for about 6 miles in Harrisburg. Each time it was in extreme traffic. |

It will do that if it gets to hot! I took mine a good 5 minutes after the overheat to run normal. Since i have had it modified and with the dyno tuning done, It has not done it yet! |

Living in that kind of traffic, you might want to think about installing a fan to blow across the cyl's. |

'99-'00 are located left and forward the spark plug on the rear head. '01-'02 are down the hole in the center of the rear head. Since yours is an '02 you have to remove the tank to get to it and to remove it from the head it will take a 1/2" deep well with a slot cut about 1-1/8"long in the side for wire clearance. I've ridden mine in 100 plus temps with a heat index over 110 and has never went to skip mode, might want to check the timing also. |

I just looked through my factory manual and I see that the check engine light should flash if it gets to warm. In the instances where I thought it was in spark skip the light did not flash. It just stumbled and the idle went up. |

You sure its skip mode? In skip the r's would drop not raise. Leaky intake seals will cause a fluctuating idle. |

American Sport Bike sells a fan assembly that fits an X1. Not too pricey either. What kind of oil are you using? Mine runs a little cooler after I switched to Royal Purple (20W50). |

It only does it when I am in traffic for a long time so I don't think it is any kind of seals. It does not lower in rpm. It goes up to about 1500 Rpms. I will have to check the American sportbike site. All my carbon fiber comes from them. |

The tapered seals for the V twin Siamese intake are therefore a compliance (slip)fitting to allow for these expansion and contraction cycles. These heat/cooling cycles take their toll over time on the seals, An air leak/lean fuel mix will cause irregular/fast idle. skip mode kills spark to one cylinder resulting in low idle. |

That sounds right. My idle did dropped and i almost turned the idle screw up a little, When i got home i read up on it and sure enough the bike was supposed to do that. |

Let me reopen this thread. I now have ECM spy. I have not had the weird idle problem for a couple of months now. When looking at ECM spy I noticed in the cold start enrichment chart something that might explain my weird idling when hot problem. Is it normal to have an enrichment of 110% at 260 degrees C? I know that is 500 degrees F, but both times it happened was heavy traffic and it was very hot ambient temp. |
