While looking over my CR, looking for things to remove as I always do on my bikes, I'm looking at the heat shield. I sit on the bike and move around in different position and can't see what that heat shield is needed for. I take it off thinking there may be some kind of clamps underneath only to see the bracket is welded on. Well, that looks kind of ugly without the shield there so I put it back on. Now I'm thinking I could grind the bracket off, use a CF shield, wrap the headers in exhaust tape (with or without the bracket, or just leave it alone for the time being. Has anybody removed the shield? | ||

I plan on removing it myself when I wrap the headers ... I can't believe it really does anything. I think I read in another post you have to grind down the fasteners on the pipe. | ||

Agreed. I thought it seemed pretty useless in its current position. While I didn't remove the mounting pads, I did just wrap over them with header wrap. MUCH better idea thAn that shield....for me anyway. Mike | ||

Ride without it and see. I bet it's there for a reason. The Elves are a pretty sharp bunch... | ||

It will protect the headers in a slide, with out this on my bike it would of dented and scratched the header.  | ||

I would remove it in a second if that bracket wasn't there. I always pause for a moment before making an irreversible change. I just can't see ever unintentionally touching it though. With my leg resting firmly on the frame there is still a good distance from the heat shield to my leg. I would have to contort myself somehow to touch it and then the chance would be just as good that I would touch some other part of the exhaust. | ||

I rode preproduction bikes. The heat shield works. Again - pull it off and go for a ride. I bet you'll notice the difference, mainly in the right ankle/calf area (and I ride ATGATT). | ||

Guys..........It acts as a small air scoop, and directs the hot air back behind the engine, and out past the swing arm. (While you are in motion). And acts as a heat shield when stationary. Sure you can remove it, but I don't think I would. | ||

Regarding the heat shielding function, would header tape provide the same or similar function? And in keeping the heat inside the header, would the need to direct hot air out the back be reduced or eliminated? | ||

Some here have mirror polished the inner surface. No personal experience, but either that, or ceramic coating the inside could very well reflect radiant heat from the pipe. Mine are staying on. R | ||

The heat shield definitely cuts down on radiant heat. Also the surface temperature of the shield will be significantly less than that of the header. No chance mine is coming off either. | ||

I wouldn't remove anything from my 1125 with the words "heat" and "shield" in their name. lol Personally the only burn redness I've experienced has been on my left calf, but all joking aside, I wouldn't remove any heat mitigating item, even if it has questionable benefit, this baby is one hot momma. But then so was my Yami R1, that burnt my right leg up, & the under seat exhaust was waaay toasty. |
