So...after having the ECM and fuel pump replaced at one dealership, and the recall harness work and new stator done at another, my '09 CR is now prone to this mysterious "system voltage" message. Headlight stays on, but I lose the speedo lights (though am still able to see the error message if riding in daylight) and turn signals...haven't checked tail light as of yet, but I'm not even gonna bother. I think the strangest part of this new issue is the cooling fans...they spin up so fast that I start to wonder if they're gonna break loose and cut their way through the bike. Is anyone else having this same issue? If so, what was the fix...if there was one. Shouldn't the new harness and stator have fixed any voltage issues?

I have the same issue every now and then, i took it in to get it fixed, im getting it back tomorrow, know what they told me? Its normal. so i was pissed when i heard that and refused to believe it, i called a different dealership, they said they have seen the problem before and suggested that i get my Race ECM for pump gas reflashed/updated. im pretty sure this will fix MY problem because my dealer didnt reflash it for the harness update tho i am unsure if such a thing will fix yours. something to ponder

YOu both need a voltage regulator
The race ecm will not fix the cluster darking out.
The voltage is over charging mine is doing it now i am just trying to get the dealer to fix it if you idle for a few or hit the bright lights it will come back on scroll to the volts i bet you see it around 17-18.
Don't get me wrong the race ecm makes the bike a ton better but it won't fix and external issue

i do agree with you Rt in the fact that the Rece ECM makes the bike a ton better but the voltage regulator did not cure my problem : ( I would know, i bought a new one and installed it myself, the dealer checked all connections and grounds all over the bike and checked all electrical and they say its in spec and they tell me that this is NORMAL!?!? all i know for sure is that they did not reflash the ECM when that harness was put in because them bastards dont get any updates for buells...they havent gotten updates since the beginning of 2009

Whomever said it was "normal" is full of sh!t. It never did this until after the new stator went in. I'm beginning to think no one knows how to fix these bikes, and HD doesn't care to make sure their techs can. I'll mention the voltage regulator to the tech that's gonna work on it tomorrow morning, but I'm way past fingers crossed at this point. Every time something gets fixed, something else goes wrong...immediately.

Dono I hear ya, mine was working all hunky dory until the harness was put in, 1st thing it did when i was driving later on that evening i had the high beams on with the lows and for about 30 seconds then i look down and see the CEL and the IC says "system voltage", i then switch it over to the volts and see them at 12.5 and decresing, i turn off the high beams and slowly watch the volts only get back up to 13 and no higher. the next day i keep the bike at idle, i watch the volts go to 14 and stay there with NO headlights on and once the fans kick in the volts drop to 12.5, then i tach on the low beams, drops to 12, then add high beams, drops to 11.5 and by now the CEL and "system voltage" along with the battery light come on. never EVER has it done this before the harness was put on. pissed and confused I come on here for answers, i see a couple things with where the VR could take care of the problem, but also saw where some people needed to have their Race ECM sent back to be reflashed (which is what im gonna do next). on some occasions while driving and usually with no headlights on i get what you get --- SYSTEM VOLTAGE with the IC going dark and turn signals not working, but when it comes to i switch over to the volts seeing 16 and sometimes 17. as I said before I replaced the VR and had no luck, I even plugged the electrical back the way it was if there was no harness in it, I checked the battery and all other grounds and connections. I do believe however that my stator is still doing just fine even tho its the original. but I will tell you what I do know, when that stator goes, warranty or not im pulling it out myself and getting it rewound with all the good stuff. some guys are luckier than others, and some get the shit end of the stick and i consider myself on the shit end simply because there is only 1 buell dealer in my state which is already a 100 mile drive for me and seeing as they dont know what they are doing means that my next closest one is 4 and half hours away : ( it sucks ass...but never the less im doing what i can to keep my head up. I hope your issue can get corrected Dono.

I should consider myself fortunate in that case. Phoenix has at least 3 dealerships in the metro area. But I too seem to be on said sh!t end. My brand spankin' new '07 XB12STT had a huge stack of service paperwork attached to it. HD took it back under the lemon law and put me on my CR. I think I'll stop before my temperature rises any more...

Dealership I now go to already said they have no VRs in stock. Ima continue to ride it regardless, but this constant in and out of the shop is gettin' real old considering its a brand f'n new bike. What really hoses me is that it is my sole transportation, and the factory is too damn cheap to put me on a rental bike until the damn thing is fixed. Not that I need to get to work or anything. FML

System voltage LCD error, blacked out display, high voltage when LCD comes back on line, headlights still work, high speed fans etc is definitely a voltage regulator problem. do a search. My trouble shooting of this problem is well documented here. dealer also could not diagnose this problem on my bike. I bought a new voltage reg about 1500miles ago and no more problems

well it finally happend to me, at just 4000 miles my stator has had it, cant even start the bike after a ride without having to charge it. click click click it goes. im gonna start calling people about stator rewindings because there is absolutly no way i want this to happen again, as i said before seeing as how my closest dealer dont know squat and they are the ones that said "its normal" and my next closest one is 4 and half hours away i have been royally screwed too by HD.

Tech said it was the recall harness that was bad. only two of the wires were working, and when it hit the third wire there was no connection and it lost voltage. Since I'm in the early stages of heat exhaustion, I can't recall all the details, but time will tell if this solved the issue.

So.....is the stator in these things "similar" to anything else readily available?

Update:

It was NOT the recall harness since it is still doing it with a second recall harness installed...gonna push for a new voltage regulator next.

Mine was doing that intermittently before I got the harness upgrade. Killing the engine and turning it back on would bring the gauge cluster back. I had to do that a few times on the highway to get my lights and turn signals back. If it is not over-voltage from a bad regulator, I'd check to make sure the battery terminal connections are tight. I heard someone mention that as a cause in another thread.

Already checked battery terminals. Going in Tuesday yet again. They think the harness might have been put in wrong and that some of the pins aren't in the right spot after the plate went back in...or something along those lines. Speed Triple anyone?

Well...update on the bike is that the new stator they put in is bad, and we are waiting on parts to be flown in from New Jersey and Oregon. They're gonna try a new stator and a flywheel magneto (?) as well. The GM from the dealership I have been going to tried to talk me into gettin on a new XR1200 since I'm having so many problems with this bike. No thanks. I said I might consider something like a V-Rod Muscle in 15 years or so...lol.
