Earlier I had posted that some have tried that with the Race ECM. I was incorrect, they burned the Race memory into a stock ECM. |

I have changed back and forth with the stock and race ECM. No change, the skip spark comes on, and go's off at the same speeds. |

I still think it may be a wiring issue. I will fix up Vern's computer when I am in the area so we can work on the bike better. Or I will datalog with his bike and see what is going on. My thinking is the ETS isn't reporting right (wire ground out?), giving crazy temp readings causing the skip spark even though it is running at normal temps. Do either of you guys have issues with cold starts? |

Oh and the Erik Buell Racing ECM is worth the $250, it is like a whole new bike once you get rid of the EPA mapping! |

Do either of you guys have issues with cold starts? Absolutely zero problems there. FWIW my ETS has been replaced twice, and it was doing it before AND after the 2nd time. |

Yes I know your sensor was replaced twice, hence why I think its the wiring. Once you get this sorted out, get the race ECM and you will wonder how you did all those thousands of miles on with such terrible mapping. |

Ok, an other thing I've seen today on my bike: After pulling away the rubber of the wire on the rear spark plug, I've noticed the connection wasn't firmly enough. Time will say. |

Well Sunday's results are in! It was mid 90's F and I ran the piss out of it, cruised a while, ran in city a while, ran Interstates a while, totaling nearly 300 miles with the fan on a manual switch, with no other changes.....it was perfect! No let's make that PERFECT!! Well except for the CEL being on that is. I start the bike, ride for about five minutes, turn on my fan switch, and leave it on until about three minutes after shutting down. It ran in all conditions smoothly, no FL/R/S, no signs of overheating, no problems at all. At times I could feel heat boiling out from under the swing arm area like it used to come out from under the seat before the comfort kit. You know, like it did before the FL/R/S days. I moved my timing back to being advanced by one short mark on the timing plate a couple of days ago. It runs smoother there, starts well, and the idle is right. Froggy, I have fixed all of the related wiring problems in that area(well that can be found with hours of disassembly and inspection) and I have an aluminum insulator wrap over the ETS and o2 wires where they can potentially touch the heads. What I have here, and do not know if I recommend it, is a manual over-ridding switch on the fan that seems to have eliminated the problem. But who knows? Hell I've been at this point several times before with a short term success. I'm watching for it's evil FL/R/S gene to pop up again, but this time it feels more completely gone. On all of the previous repair attempts a shadow of it would still show up now and then. On this run.....none what-so-ever. I am enthusiastically and cautiously optimistic about this alteration being a repair. |

28 mile ride today. 94F degrees. Interstate, secondary roads. Up to 80 mph in traffic.....all is still good. |

So this begs the question: Why is the fan not turning on when it should? |

200 mile mountain loop this morning.....all is well. Lower 80's on the slab ride back. Maybe it just needed a full time fan? |

Etennuly, You might want to order a fan and have it sitting in your garage. (Before HD hides them, sells them, or whatever they do before a common part goes on backorder with a lead time of 6mo before they replenish.) I would expect a shorter life on the current one. Hope this is a permanent fix! I know you've spend too much money and time on your bike. |

Well, I put the switch in, and took the Uly out for my short test loop. Not quite as hot today as it was a bit overcast, but still around 90 degrees. Two miles to I-95, then headed south. Usually 3 miles is all it takes to get things "skipping". Had a Mustang go by, so I dropped back and followed him at 85 mph. Got off the exit 5 miles later, looped north and picked up a Tennessee plated Dodge Charger(Etennuly - you send him ahead for me ? ), and paced him at 90 until I got back off the highway and headed home. NO SKIP SPARK, no missing/stumbling, just that CEL from the fan bypass. Decided to take the Uly to work (2nd shift), and all was well until my miss/stumble appeared. Apparently that IS a separate issue that I've been having for a few months. Sometimes it is pretty mild - just a miss. Sometimes it is bad enough that you can see the tach drop down. Not today, but sometimes it is bad enough to start backfiring and/or dying completely. Definitely engine only, all other electrical systems work if it cuts out. Did that for the next 20 miles until I got to work. But no SSBS ! Time to try more parts. How much is a coil ????? |

Sno....I have thought about having a spare fan around. The irony in that is that the first group of fans that failed were thought to be from heat exposure, the grease could not take the heat. My bike has the second generation fan that with it running all of the time, has to be better than having it sit there in a 490F degree heat tunnel just waiting to come on. Perhaps given the situation we should just all buy a spare bike for our bikes, and then maybe a second one in case we need two of the same parts, but then we may need another one in case the first one gets stolen or wrecked, leaving the need for refitting the second one so that it can be ridden. Wait....that could necessitate a fourth spare bike.....right? |

It is no good having two bikes with the same problem! That would require a third one.....and if it did not have the problem we have..... |

Take a breath Vern, I think your about to loose it!! I've had times I wanted to place some C4 right in the middle of that damn V-twin!! Like when I fought intake leaks for a whole Summer!! Your almost there buddy, just a little longer! |

You guys sure have that stay-after-it attitude! I'm impressed. Good on ya'! It's nice to have such a dedicated and tough bunch of Uly veterans on board. Now, what oil should I use? Just kidding, just kidding! Not kidding about being impressed though! |

I'm tired of bitching about mine, at least I can ride it (for now). My FL/R/S stopped with the new ETS, but plenty of other issues remain. Not bad I guess at 70K but my problems started on Day 1 in May '06. I'm pulling for you guys with this mystery, there's nothing like riding a 100 HP bike that can't pull around a Corolla up a hill in summer... |

Yes, that was a lame plug for an important sensor. I eliminated mine doing a solder joint to make sure. That plug is also the place where the ETS wire crossed over the o2 wire and rubbed through. I did aluminum insulation wrap on both the ETS and o2 wires because they are difficult to keep off from the head and other hot metal edges in there. |
