I bought my bike new back in '06. And since then I have noticed a few things caused by the seat. One being it is rubbing on the corner of the rear rocker box cover. Then a couple of years ago I noticed a few of the wires going into the ECM had the casing's rubbed off them. Finally I have noticed the Positive terminal and the battery cable has been rubbed pretty well also. Anyone else's seat doing this? It is the stock '06 seat. The corner where it is rubbing the rocker it doesn't look like it lines up very well but actually looks further away from the body and frame as opposed to being to close to it. Pics: Here is a pic of the rocker corner. It is ground down pretty well (can notice it by rubbing a finger over it) but I can't say if it has gotten any worse over the years.  Here is a picture of the seat pan where it is hitting, with the rocker in the background. Seat pan looks fine.  If you look closely you can see the red and light blue on the right connector are down to bare metal. I zip tied them lower and used some electrical tape to cover the wires. Issue hasn't happened again since.  This one you can notice a little rub, not enough to get through either casing at least, at both the red terminal and at the bottom of the photo on the wrapped battery cable.  | ||

The seat on my 09 rubs on the ECM connection but that all I have noticed, I'll check the heads tonight. I would put some liquid electrical tape on those wires before it causes an issue. | ||

My '06 rubs the right rocker box as well but nothing else. Of course, I did add a second spacer block on the ECM to make sure it did not hit anything in that area. | ||

Here is the seat pan where I think it is making the ECM rub and definitely where it is making the positive battery terminal rub (see the red on the seat pan).  (Message edited by terrible1one3 on June 25, 2010) | ||

Good point Froggy. I am 180 geared up, but have done about 60-75% of the miles two-up. | ||

Froggy, you need to drink more beer. I'm 215 + gear, and I've noticed that my seat is rubbing on the ECM... Not sure what to do about it though - other than go on a diet, but that probably ain't going to happen. | ||

Yup, 10 pounds of s*** in a 7 pound sack. Better than the Lightnings...10 pounds of s*** in a 5 pound sack! What's the ECM fix? ANyone have a link to the spacers and crap that bump the seat up? Or a thread that discusses a fix? I know I've read about something like that here before... | ||

Pull those ECM wires lower. A cable zip-tie would hold them down. You can always grind out that plastic on the seat pan that rubs your ULY's rear head. If you aluminum tape over that hole that exposes the rear head then it will keep the heat off your leg. Even with the comfort kit, that hole lets heat through to the leg. Cover it. Terrible, the original '06 seat on my X rubs in all of those places. The seatpan was slightly changed with the later versions if you look closely. I have an '06 X and an '09 XT and have been playing around swapping them and looking at the wear points. I used a small grinder to recess the seatpan where it hits the rocker cover and also dressed that corner on the rocker cover with a file. It is no big deal as it is out sight but the ECM stuff needs to be attended immediately. The wires can be tied into a lower position as EG has indicated and you can also see where the seat is rubbing on the ECM connectors. There are many posts here on Badweb that have folk reporting bad and intermittent ECM's - I'm convinced that pressure on these connectors is a major contributor as these are large connectors that are soldered to a relatively frail circuit board. There are several ways to tackle this - starting somewhere with the '07's Buell fitted a plastic spacer to the front ECM mount and many guys have fitted a second, slightly cut-down one to the rear post as double protection. This part is N0903.1AK - Travel Limiter. Before Buell came out with that fix I made a backyard version that has worked perfectly to protect the ECM. Here is the picture of my $1 fix. I cut up an old PC blanking plate and hold this on top of the ECM with that bracket. If you look at the plastic piece after cutting the edge is slightly curved to match the seatpan. Whatever you do you need to do it sooner than later as funky ECM problems will really give you a hard time.  I would say the way that fuse is connected to the positive terminal isn't helping as the red boot is raised a little higher than normal - you will need to modify your modification a little perhaps. | ||

Not as nice as Rays fix but at the time I needed something to keep my seat off the connector and it has worked for almost two years.  That bolt sits on this rubber and I ground the seat a bit.  | ||

I unbolted my ECM an just stuffed it in the bottom of the underseat tray in front of the battery underneath the battery cable. Sits there fine and the seat can't push on the connector. I don't have to mess with that darned front bolt any more either.... | ||
