FYI

Before you start spending too much time, money and heartache tracing a VSS issue, check the horn/stop light fuse and circuit. I went to my and my bike's very first track day Sunday at Jennings, and was getting a CEL and no speedo indicated speed.

I came home and immediately, in my great wisdom, started sourcing a new VSS and, thank goodness, my electrical manual arrived in time to save me from unnecessary money and embarassment. You see, I had pulled the fuse before track day so the stop light wouldn't show through the taping on the tailight lens. DUH!!

Lessons learned here:

1. Check fuses related to circuits before troubleshooting/replacing expensive components

2. When you hear hoofbeats in the woods, look for horses first, NOT zebras.

By the way, the Buell is an absolute blast to ride at the track. Unbelievable!

Why not just pull the bulb? That's what several of us did last week at Blackhawk Farms.

Cause I'm an idiot. Next time!

I used to go up to Blackhawk when I was living in Chicagoland years back. A buddy of mine I used to autocross with had a Mustang GT he ran in the old American Sedan SCCA series. That and at Road America. I used to autocross a Mustang convertible in street prepared class. Nothing like this stuff on a bike. I've drag raced a bike for quite a few years, but the only turns I made were on and off the strip!

Dean...I pull the bulb when I'm taping the lens too, haha! Two screws and you're done.

The headlights are a bitch though. I just tape over them as I've realized that pulling the fuse kills the bike...hahaha!!

Regarding the headlights, I'm a little smarter. There is a plug right under the fairing foundation that connects the whole headlight/turn signal harness. You can pull that without disrupting the ignition circuit. I actually bought the headlight fillers from ERB and actually take off the headlight cluster for the track day. I've got an extra fairing coming in so I can switch without pulling the fillers all the time, plus, I have an extra fairing support bracket. I figured eventually, I'm probably gonna lay down the bike, but why risk losing the headlight cluster and the expense of replacing it.

Here's a picture of the bike from the front with the headlight fillers installed.

Vall: Can you be more specific about where the plug is? That's good news if it's easy to get to. I can't stand having my lights on during a track day.

As for all that extra work of pulling shit off...I don't have the patience. I do about 2 trackdays a month and also use it, along with my older Buell, as a daily driver...so pulling the fairings and stuff would be a pain in the ass!! Good ideas though!

Next time you're prepping for track day, since you are taking the mirrors off anyway, take off the front fairing. Underneath the mount that the headlight module and fairing bolt to, you will find a square connector. You can't miss it. It's the only one that the headlight cluster connects to. You may be able to get at it from underneath reaching above the front fender. I can't, because I've got a steering damper and I've tied my wires in a tuck into the bracket.

PM me if you're still having problems, and if needed, I'll pull the fairing and get you a pic and/or talk you through it over the phone.

I'll take a look today after work. I don't take the mirrors off for TDs because, well, they're not on the bike anyways! I couldn't stand them so I never kept them on.

Thanks for the help, I'm pretty sure I've seen what you're talking about.

On the CR its easy. Two screws and the flyscreen comes off. All the plugs are right there. On the rear I just pull the tail bulb, and take off/unplug the whole rear fender assembly.
