My harness was replaced (recall) about 500 miles ago and today my bike died in the middle of my 22 hwy mile commute to school. Its been really hot here in Daytona Beach area. Anyway, I had it towed to Rossmeyer's and they informed me that something went wrong when Seminole HD installed the recall harness, so it burned up a relay and popped the ignition fuse. Thankfully they had a harness in stock and got me back out the door in less than three hours. But now my charging system doesn't seem like it has much "grunt." While riding it home the voltage NEVER peaked 13VDC, and when I shut down it drops to 11VDC. As a matter of fact, it ran down so low with the fans running that it failed to start up, just a couple minutes after shut down. I put the battery charger on it and trickled the battery back up to 12.6VDC. I started it up and the voltage climbed up to 14.2VDC according to my multimeter. If i turned on the high beams, the voltage would drop 0.5 volts, then slowly come back up 0.25VDC. I didn't let it get hot and see if it would really drop with the fans running, my neighbors like their sleep. Anyways, I am guessing that this is the stator failing, the day after the harness fried. Am I missing something, or is this a normal thing to expect during the summer? I guess I am just irritated that this happened right after the recall was installed, and the fact that I had smoke coming out of my bike. Its less than a year old with only 6200 miles on the ticker, none of my XBs had this sort of problems with twice the age and twice or more mileage. Help me understand what I am up against please. |

Oh and i had a fuel sys error flash at me when it died. and since they fixed it it has flashed voltage system error as well as com error. Not sure if that has anything to do with whats happening. |

Really? nothing from anyone? Not even the stray rhetorical comment, or a failed attempt at humor? |

I bet someone's stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night that could help you... |

Since I had the harness recall done, my older CR has been exhibiting some odd symptoms. Hard starting when hot sums it up best. I thought it was the battery, because the newer CR has had the same recall, but no symptoms. Gonna swap the batteries and see if there is any difference, but my working theory is that if the battery is a little bit weak, the difference in the charging profile after the recall makes a difference. Or it could be something totally different. I wonder if I can pay to have them put it back like it was? R (Message edited by carbonbigfoot on June 24, 2010) |

Theeman - look around, seems some of the '09s have problems even after getting the new stator/yours did right? Driving with the high beams on is supposed to make it worse. |

Yes i see a lot of issues with the 09 stators and harnesses. Did a search but didn't find a thread that talked about the fuel system relay melting. After the long charge, the bike is acting better, though when hot it is still running under low voltage, haven't seen below 11VDC yet, but close. I like to ride with my high beams on during the day, i figure if I annoy drivers with it, then that means they see me, the florescent green jacket helps with that too. Anyway, I was just tossing it out there in case someone had the same thing happen, they could post and tell me what eventually happened to them. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow and having them put the stator on order whether they like it or not. I don't feel like being stranded without a bike for a month just because they had to wait for the part. |
