Hi guys, Travelling on a back highway going pretty quick, the rear starts to walk around and I hear an aweful grinding. Pull over and remember reading on here about bearing troubles. Sure enough, grease everywhere and the bearing has imploded. I am 6 weeks off warranty. Has anyone replaced the bearing on thier own? what are the chances that I will be good with just a new bearing? What should I look for to tell if i can get away with just the bearing? |

If you can pull the wheel yourself, a bearing swap, even at the dealer, is generally just 1/2-1 hr labor (less than $100.. surely) and a new set of bearings, about $30. I'm guessing you don't do your own tires? |

I had mine replaced under warranty. I had to get a new wheel due to when the bearing went out it rounded out the hole for it causing the new one to be unable to press in (hole was to big). I got a new 08 wheel. I decided back in Jan to get the 2010 wheel with the dual bearing design on the belt side with the updated (black seal) bearings. |

Hi Jdugger; Yes I do my own my tires, I just have no experience or knowledge when it comes to bearings... |

Pull the wheel and inspect everything. Using a rag and your fingers, spin (rotate, really) the inner race. If it's not smooth, replace the bearings and spacer. The stuff is cheap, really. I check mine each tire change. Bearings are wear parts. Might not think of them that way, but they do go from time to time. I've swapped a fair number of them in my various sets of wheels from track duty and hard use. |

They dont look that hard to change yourself. I havent had to yet but I will when the time comes. |

> So I am probably not looking at a whole new wheel then? The question I can't answer is "did the bearing's sudden failure damage the wheel?" If the bike is still rolling and nothing too catastrophic happened, I'd say that chance of it just needing bearings is a good one. Also, rear wheels are relatively easy to come by on the used market and aren't too expensive. In the grand scheme of shit happening, this one is probably minor. |

thanks Jdugger, I just needed someone else to say it! lol The kicker to this is I was out looking at a second bike about an hour away from my city. It happened 5 kms from the guys place after I had looked at the bike. I think Persephone just got jealous lol |
