Ok, so I went to put on a new front muffler clamp, as mine has been broken for a few months now. I just haven't had a chance to get around to fixing it. As I was doing that, I found out that one of the rear clamps was broken as well. Well fondogiddyap, I guess I'll order one of those too. Then I decided to do a general exam of the exhaust, and found this:  I also found the exhaust stud was broken off (AGAIN - the third time this has happened.)  Are these problems the result of not fixing the front exhaust strap quickly enough? So . . . I guess I need a new header. Anyone know how much that will cost? I looked in the classifieds here and nobody has one, and I looked on ebay and didn't see one.  I did successfully fix one thing - the wire for the headlight ground broke on Friday, (for the second time - seems like a design flaw) and I patched that up easily. | ||

I'd say odds are good that not fixing the strap immediately led to the other problems. A good welder could repair that; you might check with some local shops and see what they say. Should be done using TIG for best results. | ||

+1 on the welder. Chances are if you find a good one the pipe will be stronger than when new. Shouldn't be hard to do for them either. | ||

Not fixing your front strap most definitely caused the header and stud breakage. All of the weight and stresses that the front strap is meant to hold was put on the header and studs. | ||

Ok, so will welding the header make it strong enough, or do I need to buy a new one? I'm not sure I want to spend a hundred bucks (or whatever welding would cost) on a bandaid when what I really need is a replacement... | ||

Put it this way...if you get it welded properly, and it cracks again, I can practically guarantee the new crack will NOT be on the weld. Not to say you don't possibly have additional weak spots on the header.... | ||

I've got two cracks in my header, (possibly caused by no front exhaust clamp) But the cracks run along the header, around the bend. One on each side. I think they co-incide with the point between where the metal stretched on the outside of the bend, and compressed on the inside of the bend. Maybe all headers were not created equal, and QA issues decree that some will crack, (No doubt influenced by outside stresses) What do you think?? | ||

Ok, so will welding the header make it strong enough, or do I need to buy a new one? I had a header welded on a race car. It held just fine, and only cost $30 from a professional welding shop. The big question to me is, how difficult is the remove/replace procedure, and what are the additional costs (non-reusable gaskets/straps/etc.) If it only takes an hour and $20, get the thing welded. If it's a day long project, and takes $100 worth of additional crap (front straps are not reusable BTW), then I'd replace it with new, and not risk having to do it again. |
