Last night my wife and I went for ride to just get outof the house. 15 minutes into the ride I broad side a deer at 60 mph. Threw both of us through the air. I have a little road rash and a very sore back. My wife is not as lucky. She is in the ICU at the MED badly injured. Please be careful and watch for deer

Sorry to hear it, and yea, wild animals can be part of the danger of this sport.

Even on the track: the other day, a car hit a very large/long snake that wandered on track. By the time the cars came off and the bike session settled in, some vultures were already dining.

I came racing down the back straight and almost hit one AND the snake at a buck-20+! Gaaak!

Get well soon.

Sorry to hear about your bride... I've always heard that June is the worst month for deer movement. She will be in my prayers!

She has many small broken bones in her back, broken hip, collar bone and ribs. She has a puncture wound in her shoulder with bad road rash and a small amount of bleeding on her brain. She is going to have to remain in the ICU until the bleeding goes away. This is enough for me. I'm hanging up my helmet. If it was me in the room I'd probably recover and get right back on. Her getting hurt this bad and me being able to walk away practicaly in injured makes me sick. I know that if I were to ride again everytime I leave the house she would be a nervous wreck. Thank everyone for your best wishes I am not one much for prayer either but it is still very kind of everyone

Jake, I would probably feel the exact same way in your shoes. I love to ride, it's one of the few things I really feel alive doing, but it would be very, very hard to do if I were in the same situation. Give it some time to sink in though. This wound is still quite fresh.

I'm not one to pray either, but I do believe in the power of the collective. Good thoughts are with you both. It hurts my heart to see others suffering in this way.

Jake- so sorry to hear of your trouble. I met some guys for supper last night and made a point to ride ~10 miles out of the way afterwards to avoid the straight route home which is noted for many deer. It could happen to any of us this time of year.

More prayers sent.

I live in the Austin. Notorious for having small deer even inside the city.

I almost crashed into one once..Did my first Stoppie trying to avoid it.

Speedy recovery to you and your wife.

Best of luck to your wife to make a full recovery.

So if you're hanging up your helmet, does that just mean that you plan to ride with less gear? : )

Seriously, though, every person has to make his or her own decision about whether or not to accept the risks of riding. I'm of the opinion that I love riding too much to give it up because of what *might* happen.

"And there are people against hunting..."
You're telling me. I was ferrying a turboprop plane for an airline to their repair facility and on take off a frickin deer runs across in front of the plane. I just hit rotation speed, and had to try and figure out whether to hit it while braking or pull up to get over it. I went over, but by next to nothing clearance. I probably would have come out ok, and just destroyed the wing, but scared the living hell out of me. Anyway f*** wildlife is my opinion.
Besides that again, my prayers and my families prayers are with you and your wife jake99buell.
