Anyone have something other than a full hydraulic shop press they like?

I'm finding I'm having to swap the bearings in my wheels from time to time from track use, and would prefer to be able to do the job myself.

In particular, a good way to pull old bearings is desired...

google for "slide hammer bearing puller" comes up with a variety of pullers. Just make sure to look at the size, you'll need smaller ones for doing bike wheel bearings. Sure, the bigger ones are nice, but it's got to go down small enough in it's range to fit inside the inner race to be of any use. I saw several on there that only went down to 1 1/8" or so and wouldn't work for what you want.

i have one like this though a different name.

also does the steering head bearings and plenty off stuff on other bikes. installing bearings i usually use some threaded bar and sockets, but alway pull on the outer race

Harbor Freight blind hole bearing puller set #95987 - $39.95
Not their typical Chinese made junk.
Excellent quality.

I've destroyed the collet for the HF blind bearing puller trying, and failing, to get an XB bearing out. I'm not saying it can't work, only that it often won't.

I have a press, but getting purchase on the bearing to be able to apply the force to it is still the biggest challenge. A thick washer welded to the inner race works with no trauma to the spacer tube.

Thanks Al, nice tip. I wondered how that could be done. I didn't mind pushing the spacer over and whacking a punch with a hammer for the kids KX-60, but I didn't want to do that on the Uly.

I've got a proper split collet slide hammer that works well but I've made a similar tool for a mate from an appropriately sized Rawlbolt, studding and section of heavy pipe. That works well too and is very cheap.

Made mine out of high tensile studding, old 3/4 sq drive sockets, a bit of welding and steel plate with a bit of creativity.

An old pillar drill stand also sees service as a press if needed.
