Hey guys did some searching around in the archives regarding the exhaust valve actuator but only could find info on the mod of wiring it open, and I don't want to do that. At idle the uly sounds like it has a tiny exhaust leak. There are no leaks but it seems as if the valve is stuck open slightly. This happened before but after taking the bike out and running it hard it was fine. Well I figured on the ride to work this morning, I would ride hard and see how it sounded when I got to work. But when I got to work it still sounds like the valve is slightly open. Is there maybe carbon build up so the valve is sticking slightly or is the actuator the problem. Is there a way to test the actuator? |

WOT on the throttle and cycle the kill switch. I think. Also, do it with the airbox lid off so you can see the actuator. There's a threaded adjustment on the actuator cable up on the airbox, just like a throttle cable or clutch cable. |

Kill switch run. Hold throttle wide open and turn the key on and the actuator will do a full cycle. You can watch the muffler to see it cycle. |

With the bike shut off and actuator back at idle position, there should be just a very slight amount of slack in the cable. This is very much the same as the slack you should have in clutch or throttle cables. If you find no slack, turn adjuster on the cable to give slack. If you find excessive slack when you first check it, I would say the valve in the muffler is probably sticking open for some reason. Not sure if any of this will help you. A few years ago, I had my valve stick partly open. Did not close all the way. It was not the cable or actuator (on the air box) but just some external dirt or whatever holding it up. I sprayed some WD-40 on the valve and worked it back and forth and that fixed it. Never stuck again in 20,000 miles. |

Ok I took the airbox cover off and performed the actuator test. Looks like the actuator may have slipped a gear internally. I have read that they have plastic gearing. The actuator was keeping the valve wide open already in the closed position. Once I disconnected the cable it fully closed. I took pics of the actuator's positions from the actuator test. Here is fully closed. Look at where the cable is sitting. Thats where the actuator should be sitting when in the closed position.
