I hope I can make this work. I just bought some carbon/kevlar twill and some carbon satin weave to try to turn it into a one piece flyscreen and pair of hand guards. The attachment points will be under some yet to be bought bar ends. |

Uhhh... what mold are you using - what is it made of? If not designed AS a vacuum-bag tool, you'll need to envelope-bag the entire tool. What resin you plan on using? What temperatures are you curing the resin? Do you plan on having the fiber pattern visible after you've laid it up and cured it? This is a big deal because unless you know what you're up against, the surface is going to have a lot of pinholes... meaning that you'll have a fair bit of work in clear-coating/sanding/clear-coating until you have a smooth surface. If you're just color-painting it, that becomes simple Vacuum bagging is likely more trouble than it's worth as compared to simple contact lay-up. There are specific bagging materials for wet lay-up vacuum bagging that are different than materials for vacuum-bagging preimpregnated materials (though not by much) AT least the flyscreen is a perfect piece to try - not too much material... good learning experience. Take pictures! |

I think am going to build my mold out of the plasticine that I will use to take the impression. I'm still researching techniques though and I may use a fiberglass-epoxy negative mold. Either way it is going in the bag too. I bought 600 cps, 3:1 mix epoxy. I read that it cures best at 80 F so that is what it will get. I plan to use at least 3 layers of composite plus foam board with the carbon and red kevlar twill showing, so pinholes are improbable. At least if you mean holes where the finished piece has no fibers, I am still a little unclear about terminology. I will post pics if this isn't too big of a disaster. |

Heres a project I did last winter. Hope it helps you http://www.njbuellowners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f =7&t=21 When making molds give yourself at least 4" extra working room to allow for excess composite, peelply, breather, and vacuum bag sealant. Good luck. The hybrid fabric is some good looking stuff. Vacuum bagging is pretty simple. Use the yellow sticky tape though, the gray isn't as tacky. I am going to start making some blue/carbon hybrid parts when I finally get some time. Let us know how it goes. |
