I have searched a bit, but cant find a similar scenario.

Ok its been pinging, but not all the time. To me it sounds like a spun rod bearing to me. I took it to a friend who loves Harley and has worked on them for a little less that half a century, and he said it was the primary chain needing adjustment. We adjusted it, without a torque wrench because of lacking the crows foot. The pinging went away, but only for a bit. now after being in the garage for a month we started it back up, and it pings again, but not on every revolution, and not even when under heavy throttle, just does it once in a while. This winter I plan to tear it to pieces and rebuild all I can. Until then I just want some piece of mind that I won't strand my wife somewhere through my ignorance to Harley engineering. Any help would be great.

BTW I've had this thumper for close to two years, I upgraded to a CR a year ago but kept this around for when my wife warmed up to riding. So in the first year i put 6k-7k miles in that year, prior to buying it, it had 1500 miles and is an 03. Not sure what other info I can provide to help with the diagnosis.

Is it more than likely to do it when cold or sudden throttle? Probably a few flats still loose.

It starts happening when its warmed up, and its not at the immediate crack of the throttle, as it should be if it we a spun bearing, it happens as the rpm's go rise.

Could be a shot out tension shoe as well - they get worn down quick when adjusted to manual spec.
