This may not be the right forum, but as a military leader, I am inspired by Mr Buell's leadership and management style. Court's anecdotes allow me to paint my own portrait and glean my own lessons.
Be there.
Be direct.
Be accountable.
Apply failure as a tool to success.
Mr Buell may not say these things, but his example implies it. I too, as Court describes in his recollections, would have been proud to have been on his team.
People like Mr Buell don't just fade away, I see a bright horizon. |

First post.
It strikes me as very odd that H-D couldn't find a solution to let EB take Buell on it's own. H-D has the history of being kicked around from the 1960's until their on LBO in the early 80s. Additionally asking the federal government for help (the ITC) in 1983 which raised the tariff on heavyweight bikes (700cc+) to a whopping 49.4%.

I couldn't find more info on the 1983 struggles, but I remember that they had some loans guaranteed by the Federal Govt. I remember the day they paid it all back early, and made a big splash about it.
Another question that I have is where are the State Government officials from Wisconsin? What have they given up in the past to H-D? Why couldn't the state work with H-D to have Buell stand on it's own? I get the fact that they are claiming that Buell was too far incorporated to the H-D machine, but I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have just subtracted the Buell plant and set up another company to shuttle parts and labor between the 2 companies over a 2 year period.
H-D has clearly missed the shift in buying habits in addition to the economic slump. Do they still operate under thought that the there will be a waiting list for new H-D again?
H-D is operating in a vacum that is about to shift yet again. Can you say Lionel? Yes the model trains... they have the same problem, their target client is getting too old and getting younger clients is very hard because there is too much other stuff out there. I'm 40 and the only H-D I was looking at was the V-ROD until a co-worker who is a big H-D guy told me to look at something else if I wanted sporty like that.
You must innovate your way thru economic downturns, so that when the wave finally breaks, you are set out further than the competition that decided to cut their way to profitability in the short term. You will set yourself up for much greater profitability once you hit the big rebound wave. |

Picked up an odd rumour this morning. Erik Buell and Harley Davidson are working out some sort of deal to get Erik back under the corporate tent. Just chit chat from people that have been racing for so long they bleed orange/black. They seemed to think an announcement was imminent and we will all be surprised/pleased, well me anyway. |

Huh?!?!?! I doubt that there is something illegal. Any contract (Erik's separation agreement0 between two parties can be renegotiated if both parties agree. |

Perhaps after his first experience, Erik had a legal document prepared which would automatically have him declared clinically insane if he ever tries to work with Harley Davidson again.

Once bitten, twice shy. As long as "road block to progress" Willy G. is in the house, along with the Wandell cup bearers and foot pads, people who expect to change the world have no place at H-D. |
