I was giving my new to me S2 the once over and notice that the nut on the right side pulley was loose, so I took the retention plate off and removed the nut by hand. The sprocket however, was not loose, just the nut. But what I found was odd, the rubber piece covering the end of the shaft was gone and I could spin the needle bearings on the inside of the shaft? Here are some pics, what should I do next? what are my options?

Years Ago 1999 S2s for me and some other people had a problem with bad primary sprockets. My 1st at 22,000 miles,2nd at 24,000,bad mettle and after that no warranty. they would strip out.I replaced primary belt sprocket. Replaced Trans out-put shaft, both belt sprockets, belt But never lost seal on output shaft .That is nasty,it had to get in trans and primary! You must have lost trans fl.But may be you caught it in time Best of Luck!!!!!I never seen a seal come out on its owen?????Unless not installed right.I think bike has been worked on and seal not correctly installed. |

18,500 miles. Bought it from a friend that assured me it was in 'perfect' shape. So now I need to compile a list of parts needed to go into the primary cover and see what is going on. Funny thing is I usually ride with a full face and had only put on about 100 miles. I replaced the rear master and purged the lines (front and rear) and the brakes worked great. I took it around the block a few times with my helmet off and notice that something was not right, so this morning I took a peak in there and Walla! I hope it isen't too bad, because it ran perfectly except for an odd 'krumping' noise when I got on and off it, which is why I looked. Anyway, I have been in contact with Brad and the Buell Rescue Center and am waiting for some time to open up but would like to have the parts ordered and in hand before moving forward. Thanks for the input guys. I wanted/plan to keep this one on the road and in mint shape so we will see where this journey takes us (me and the S2). |

ok, here is the temp fix. if all the rollers are still there, grease up the bearing rollers with a light grease. i used an aircraft grease, Mobil 28, and then took a flat aluminum bar and placed it across the bearing. i then lightly and evenly tapped the bearing back into place. retorqued the sprocket nut and kept on riding. ymmv good luck, tim |

He's got them! I think I have a game plan on getting this bugger back to right. To me on the safe side, I think I'll pull the tranny and check the 5th gear bearing play. If it's OK, we'll do just as Tim suggested. Just tap the bearing back in place and insert a new seal. He's going to truck it over here, not ride it! I'll post pictures of the process... Brad |
