Brakes... I am not working now but when I was commuting I was riding about the same as you, 125 miles round trip. Same 90% freeway at 70-80 mph (about a 1 hour trip each way) 6' tall and 200lbs. Mine is an 06' (Black) On one hand, I would love to get 65mpg with my Uly but very unlikely. I ride moderately fast. But I am not a daredevil, never smoked a rear tire or lifted the front more than 6" off the ground. I am happy to get 45mpg avg., I just accept it. |

Forgot to mention I have a modified (by me) stock pipe, drilled out airbox and a race ecm with my own maps. None of those however gave me a bump in mileage really but I suppose over time, and all the tweaking, I could have ended up in a sweet spot of sorts without knowing it. I only check my mileage occasionally. My AFV stays right at 98% and I do have some low rpm surging (lean). |

Some of us might be pulling the nozzle out 1/2 way to get more gas in the tank. That extra squirt could make a big difference in 130 vs 150 miles to a tank. It shuts off too early if the nozzle is all the way in. |

Yeah, the fillup is critical if you want to get the most from your tank.
I never poke the nozzle in there, I always fill it to the lower ring in the filler.
If you go above that, it's most likely just going to vent to the street. |

I trailered the Uly (with the 9sx) in the Saab back and forth to the NC ride.
On the way up, I had one case mounted on the Uly. On the way back, I had two. I lost 3 mpg when the second case went on (the Saab has a very accurate real time MPG monitor).
I leave my bags on, and I am both tall and heavy and heavy handed on the throttle, and I get 42 mpg. I suspect if I pulled the bags that would go up to at least 45 mpg.

I am pissed, I think something is wrong with my bike, it isn't getting the fuel economy that it did last year. Today I was out riding, the gas light came on at about 220 miles. It took 3.48 gallons to fill it up, which is only a little over 62mpg 
I need to keep working harder, I know she can get 75mpg again, I just need to find a non-ethanol based fuel. |

Well, here was my experience from yesterday, but I want to preface it with my specs so that people stop comparing pre 2008 bikes to 2008 and above since those of us with the 2008 and above will never get the same mileage. (except froggy)
Specs: 2008 Xt, 10,000 miles, Comfort kit with flash, Alt 1300ft, Rider=Fat (230lbs)
I put on roughly 225 miles yesterday before noon with a refuel at 150 miles. Yup, I got my personal best of 44.9 mpg by short shifting, keeping the speed down, using all gears, not accelerating on hills and no over-aggressive driving/passing.
This was all good and if I had not put the first 65 miles on that tank in town squidding it out, I would have done much better.
The reality sunk in at around 180 miles into this Sunday morning cruise: Buell may have claimed 65 mpg and Froggy and others have proven that it can be done. But you know what, everyone has a price for fun driving and mine just happens to be ride it for the reason you bought it!
It was cool to get good mileage, but I paid for a bike that ran down that HD Street glide on the backroads pulling big sweepers and passing him and his old lady with my knee sweeping the ground! Oh darn, I only got 38mpg on the way home! But damn it was fun!!
Ride it like you stole it knowing you can ride it like you want the the fuel light to come on at 180 miles. At least we have the option! |
