My 08 XT with only 1500 miles on it occasionally idles higher than 1000-1050 RPM when I stop, maybe up to 1150-1200 RPM at times, especially when hot. When it does this, I just wait a few seconds and most of the time it drops back down to normal idle RPM by itself. Do any of you have this same issue? Is there some reason they are designed to do this? It has done this since I bought it new last November. I adjusted the throttle cables per the factory service manual during my 1,000 mile first service but it did not change anything, just now have slightly less free play in the throttle. Any ideas? This is more of an annoyance than a problem but I would rather it did not do this. Thanks guys. |

The bikes have a computer controlled idle that will vary depending on conditions including engine temperature. The bike is doing exactly what it is programmed to do |

Thanks Froggy! That's good to know. I guess I just get a little too fussy with this bike sometimes. |

Maybe try a TPS reset w/engine warmed up. |

Motorbike, I thought I had the answer but then checked that you have an 08' model with the auto-tps/timing. BUT, the earlier models being the 06/07 years have that problem if you reset the tps before the engine goes into closed loop which is fully warmed engine. AND if you set your idle too high. Can you even set your idle on the 08/09/10 years or is that also un-settable? If you can set it then set it at 1000 rpm and that might help. Not good to set it too low though, otherwise your bike will not charge the battery during idle. |

My 08XT does exactly that and I agree that it's very annoying. This didn't start until I had the comfort kit re-flash done. I know that the re-flash doesn't do anything except change when the fan comes on but my bike started the high idle on the way home after the re-flash. It would be great if someone comes up with a solution. If it becomes really annoying I let the clutch out a little. |

Yes the Idle range map is fully programmable. My 1125CR is running a 1200 idle warm instead of the stock 1700. |

Dano, I have done the TPS reset a few times on this bike but have always done it cold. You may be right. I'll try it with the engine warm next time, just to see if it changes anything. Electra, you are right. No idle speed adjustment on the 08. I think it is completely controlled by the IAC and ECM, just like modern cars with OBDII computers. (when I say modern, keep in mind that I used to make a living working on cars with carburetors and point-type ignition!) Ulykan, I installed the complete comfort kit with the exception of the exhaust header heat shield. I prefer the look of the blue pipe to the look of the heat shield. I have not done the re-flash yet and might not unless I get really sick of people asking me what that noise is after I shut the bike off. As Froggy said, the bike is programmed to do this depending on temp and other conditions. I hope it is as simple as that. I assume the theory is that by running the bike at a slightly higher RPM when hot, it will help cool the engine by circulating oil which is one of the 3 ways our Ulys are cooled. Maybe Ulykan's bike actually runs a little hotter under certain conditions with the re-flash, while stopped at a red light for instance. If so, it would explain why it does run higher idle RPM now than pre-reflash? Thanks for listening! |

I had the same problem on my 08. I found some black grunge in the throttle body throat where the butterfly closes and in the idle air control port. Cleaned it up with cotton swabs and carb cleaner. While I was in there I removed and cleaned the tank vent line from the canister to the throttle body and blew pressurized air through the line and throttle body. I also blew through the canister and then added a small oiled K&N filter to the canister inlet. Overkill for sure but my idle problems were solved! Husky |

Froggy, you got me on that one. I guess the idle RPM is adjustable on the 08, just not by turning a screw or a knob. I have no idea how to program these things, guess I'm just too old to learn. Too bad these bikes didn't have a carburetor option instead of fuel injection, I could probably make that work! |

It is just a matter of pressing a few buttons, and you know exactly what its set to. No guessing or black magic like carbs.

Just my suggestion and opinion: Don't get the comfort kit reflash. That will make your fan probably last forever. I've got the original 06' fan on my bike. Only runs at shutdown .....so far. Over 25,000 miles on the fan. With the reflash your fan will be running constantly and why would anyone want that. |

Froggy, the problem I have is where to start on this programming thing. Do you connect your laptop to the bike with a special cable or what? I do debug and repairs on high end business computers all day long but I only work with hardware, no software or programming. Almost like being a mechanic in an automotive electrical specialty shop, which I used to do. I am basically computer illiterate. I can tell that you know what you are talking about but it is almost a foreign language to me. I am always open to learning but please understand this will take me a little time to catch onto. Right now, I am very happy with my Uly but I like to be informed and armed for any problems I may have in the future. I have already learned more about my XT from this website in 7 months than I knew about all my past bikes combined. Keep up the good work guys! Thanks! |

Yes you need a computer and a "ECMspy cable". It is a special USB cable that can be used to communicate with your bike. The cable is about $50, you can get them from American Sport Bike or a number of other sources. The instructions are on ecmspy.com if you want to make the cable yourself. From there, you use the program called ECMread to download the programming off your bike, and then open it up in Tuner pro. From there, have fun tweaking, save, and burn the programming back onto the bike with ECMread |

Thanks Froggy! I can just see myself getting carried away with this. My wife already thinks I spend way too much time with my bike. I need to work on her attitude! Thanks again. |

Does the ECMspy software work on 09 year bikes also? |
